PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's rugby team was defeated by Dartmouth, 52-17, on Saturday at Marvel Field. Sophomores Zoe Belge (Lincoln, Mass.) and Zy Thomas (Fairfield, Calif.) and freshman Kate Molloy (Sudbury, Mass.) provided the scoring for the Bears while rookie Erin Jessop (Ashland, Mass.) notched a successful conversion.
"I thought we played a great game, the score does not reflect all the work the team has put into training this week," said head coach Kathy Flores. "We put points on one of the top teams in the league."
Dartmouth (1-0) opened with a 7-0 lead with a try and conversion. Senior Alexandria Simon (Kaunakakai, Hawaii) later chopped down an opposing prop and stopped a potential Big Green break. After a back and forth period of play, Dartmouth added two tries and one conversion for a 19-0 advantage.
Brown (1-2) then hammered in a try after heavy pressure in the Dartmouth 22 with Belge powering her way in for a score (19-5). The Big Green closed out the first half with a try and a conversion for a 26-5 lead.
With Dartmouth threatening on Brown's tryline, Thomas poached the ball and won the possession back for the Bears. The Big Green later regained possession and recorded back-to-back tries and conversions for a 40-5 advantage.
Simon continued to have a strong match and one of her tackles forced a Dartmouth knock and a Brown scrum. A strong maul off the lineout led to a try by Thomas, her third of the year, giving the Bears 10 points.
The Big Green upped their lead to 52-10 before Molloy tallied her first collegiate try with two minutes remaining in the match. Jessop then was successful with the conversion to bring the score to its final of 52-17.
Brown will next compete at American International on Saturday, Sept. 21 starting at 5:00 p.m.
