PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's rugby team opened the spring 7s season on Saturday by hosting Brown 7s at Berylson Family Fields. The Bears claimed third in the tournament with a convincing 38-0 over West Chester in the third place match.
"I'm proud of how we played today," said head coach Kathy Flores. "A close game against Quinnipiac and tough play against Army showed the tenacity we have and will need for Ivies next week."
American International, Army, Brown, Norwich, Quinnipiac and West Chester competed on the A Side while Army B, Brown B, Long Island, Molloy and Sacred Heart made up the B Side.
A Side
Senior Louise Leitao (Porto Alegre, Brazil) scored the first two tries in the opener for the A Side versus AIC as Brown had a 14-0 lead at the half. Freshman Zy Thomas (Fairfield, Calif.) and Leitao scored in the second for a 21-0 win. Versus Quinnipiac in match two, sophomore Karina Wang (Ottawa, Ontario) recorded the first try of the contest but the Bobcats would take the battle, 7-5.
In the third place match versus West Chester, junior Abby O'Keefe (St. Louis, Mo.) started things with a try and senior Elise Hinkle (Sudbury, Mass.) added the extra point for a 7-0 lead. Wang then touched down another score for a 12-0 advantage, a lead Brown brought into the break. The Bears took a 19-0 advantage on another score by Wang and a kick from sophomore Olivia Duba (San Ramon, Calif.). O'Keefe added her second of the match while sophomore Lexi Nelson (Foxboro, Mass.) followed with her first of the day and Duba converted the kick for a score of 31-0. Duba then put one in herself and added a kick for the final of 38-0.
B Side
Brown trailed Molloy 12-0 after the first half in its opening match. Sophomore Janelys Torres (Lawrence, Mass.) put the Bears on the board with a try to begin the second but Molloy would add another try and take the win, 17-5. The Bears would fall in their next two matches with a 33-5 defeat to Sacred Heart and a 19-0 loss to Army.
Brown will next compete at Ivy 7s, hosted at Harvard, on Saturday, April 13.
