Women’s Tennis Tops Dartmouth, 4-3

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Brown women's tennis team defeated fifth-seeded Dartmouth, 4-3, at the ECAC Championship at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center on Friday. Brown, the fourth seed, came back after falling in the doubles round and won four of the six singles matches to advance to play top-seeded Princeton tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
"We had several players in our match today who rose to the occasion in pressure situations and found a way to close out tight sets and matches," said head coach Lucie Schmidhauser. "This willingness to battle and exploit opponent's weaknesses was the difference in our match today. Freshman Sophie Reddy really shined in this regard. Her opponent came out firing in the first set, but Sophie just hung in there, scraped out the second set and broke her opponent's weaker side down in the third set, decisively clinching the match for us."
Dartmouth took the doubles round for a 1-0 lead with wins in the first and third spot. The Bears came back to win the singles round, besting the Big Green, 4-1. Freshman Sophia Reddy (Eden Prairie, Minn.) claimed her second singles match in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Freshman Ryan Peus (Palos Verdes, Calif.) was next in the third spot with a 6-4, 7-6 win while junior Juliana Simon (Los Angeles, Calif.) followed in the fourth spot with 6-4 wins in both sets. Senior Katie Ta (Mission Viejo, Calif.) closed the day with a 7-5, 6-1 showing in sixth singles.
Brown will face Princeton tomorrow (Feb. 9) at 2:00 p.m. in the second day of the ECAC Championship.
