Women’s Rugby Edged by West Chester, 15-14, in Championship Match

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Brown women's rugby team was edged by West Chester, 15-14, on Sunday in the NIRA Tier II Championship at Mignon Field. It was a tale of two halves, as the Bears did all of their scoring in the first half with two tries and two conversions while the Rams scored three unanswered tries in the second to claim the victory.
"It was a heartbreaker but everyone gave what they had and I couldn't have asked for more," said head coach Kathy Flores.
Penalties on both ends caused the match to start slowly but Brown got things going with hard work from freshmen Erin Jessop (Ashland, Mass.) and Mahdia Parker (Harlem, N.Y.) that led to a try by sophomore Zy Thomas (Fairfield, Calif.). Junior Olivia Duba (San Ramon, Calif.) was successful on the conversion for 7-0 lead. Jessop helped make it 14-0 on a penalty try after a high tackle and the conversion coming from Duba.
After back and forth play to close the stanza, Brown would take its 14-0 lead into the break.
The Rams started the second half with their first try of the contest, bringing the game to 14-5. West Chester continued to click, touching down two more tries to take a one-point lead, 15-14.
Brown had possession as time was winding down but the clock would expire before the Bears could get a score.
