
Women's Tennis Topples Cornell, 6-1

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Brown women's tennis team defeated Cornell, 6-1, on Sunday at the Reis Tennis Center to close out the regular season. The Bears won the doubles point and had a great showing in singles, taking five of the six matches for the victory.
Junior Katie Ta (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and freshman Semi Oloko (Canton, Mass.) opened the action in third doubles with a 6-3 triumph. The Big Red would knot the round with a 6-3 win in first doubles but the Bears came back to win in the second spot, 6-4, with senior Alyza Benotto (Los Angeles, Calif.) and sophomore Devon Jack (San Marino, Calif.) teaming up to gain the first point.
Benotto next started things in singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win in the second position. Cornell followed with its lone individual win of the day in first singles. Sophomore Juliana Simon (Los Angeles, Calif.) began the string of four-straight victories for the Bears with a 6-3, 6-1 showing in sixth singles and was followed by Jack (6-4, 6-2, third), freshman Courtney Kowalsky (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) (6-2, 7-5, fifth) and junior Taylor Cosme (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) (6-4, 6-3, fourth).
With her two wins today, in doubles and singles, Benotto closes her career in sole possession of fourth place all-time at Brown in combined wins with 154. Her 75 career singles wins tie Misia Krasowski '13 for sixth all-time while her 79 doubles victories also tie Bianca Aboubakare '11 for third at College Hill.
