Women's Rugby Reaches Championship Match at Pioneer 7s

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Brown women's rugby team went 3-2 at Pioneers 7s on Saturday at Park Avenue Field and reached the championship match, but fell to Sacred Heart, 28-12.
The Bears opened the day by running out to a 57-5 win over Molloy in the first match. Freshmen Lexi Nelson (Foxboro, Mass.) and Karina Wang (Ottawa, Ontario) each recorded two tries in the first half while freshman Olivia Duba (San Ramon, Calif.) added a score and junior Elise Hinkle (Sudbury, Mass.) was successful on two conversion kicks. Senior Bethany Dubois (Newtown, Conn.) contributed three tries and a conversion kick while Duba added two more herself and freshman Meredie Cohen put in a try for the second half while two successful conversions were kicked (Dubois and Hinkle).
In match two, the Bears were defeated by host Sacred Heart, 24-12. Brown took a 12-7 advantage into halftime with tries from Hinkle and Nelson with a conversion by Hinkle but the Pioneers tied it 12-12 to open the second and recorded two tries and conversions for the victory.
Brown won its third match by concession versus LIU Post. The Bears followed with a 41-0 blanking of Mount St. Mary's. Duba and Wang scored in the first for a 14-0 lead with two conversions by Hinkle. Brown then ran away with the contest in the second frame with scores by Hinkle, Wang, Duba (2) and Nelson.
In the championship match, Duba added a quick try to open the contest 5-0 but Sacred Heart responded and added a conversion for a 7-5 advantage and then built its lead to 21-5. Dubois converted a quick tap for a try and a successful conversion but SHU shut the door with a try to close the contest, 28-12.
