PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University wrestling senior Justin Staudenmayer and juniors Ian Butterbrodt and CJ LaFragola have earned NWCA All-Academic honors, the National Wrestling Coaches Association announced on Thursday.
A three-time NCAA qualifier, Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) earned Honorable Mention All-Ivy honors, won the 157-pound weight class at the Navy Classic (Nov. 18), and finished sixth at the EIWA Championships (Mar. 3-4) this past year. He went 12-14 overall, 8-3 in duals, and 7-1 in EIWA duals.
Butterbrodt (North Andover, Mass.) gained Second Team All-Ivy honors this winter and placed eighth at the EIWA Championships (Mar. 3-4). He finished 18-14 overall with a 7-4 dual mark and 6-2 EIWA dual record, ranking third on the team in EIWA dual wins.
Qualifying for the NCAA Championships for the second time this past season, LaFragola (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) garnered Second Team All-Ivy honors, won the 184-pound weight class at the Navy Classic (Nov. 18), and placed fifth at the EIWA Championships (Mar. 3-4). He ranked third on the team in wins (21), third in dual wins (eight), first in dual EIWA wins (seven), and third in dual points (25).
As a team, Brown posted the No. 12 GPA in the nation, ranking in the top 12 for the seventh straight year. Brown came in second in 2017, third in 2016, fifth in 2015, fourth in 2014, sixth in 2013, and eighth in 2012.
The NWCA determines the team grade-point average using a system that includes 12 student-athletes from each program. A total of 10 of these came from the wrestlers that were entries in the NCAA tournament conference qualifier. The NWCA also uses a system, which combines athletic and academic success, in determining individual qualifiers.
