Viruet Becomes Wrestling's Third NCAA Qualifier on Final Day at EIWAs

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Junior Jon Viruet earned a spot in the NCAA Championships, joining fellow NCAA qualifiers senior Justin Staudenmayer and junior CJ LaFragola, as Brown University wrestling concluded competition at the 114th Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships at Hofstra University's David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex on Sunday.
The Bears' three NCAA representatives will compete at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio from Mar. 15-17. The NCAA will announce the full field on Tuesday, Mar. 6 and unveil the brackets on Mar. 7 at 6:00 p.m.
Brown garnered three NCAA qualifiers for the first time since 2008.
Viruet (Springfield, Mass.) placed at EIWAs for the second straight year and punched his ticket to the NCAA Championships with a sixth-place finish at 165 pounds after topping No. 7 seed Andrew Mendel of Army in the consolation.
LaFragola (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.), the No. 5 seed at 184 pounds, led the Bears with a fifth-place finish after defeating No. 4 seed Alex DeCiantis of Drexel in the fifth-place match. He will head back to the NCAA Championships for the second straight season.
Now a four-time EIWA competitor, three-time NCAA qualifier, and two-time EIWA placer, Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.), the No. 3 seed at 157 pounds, finished in sixth place.
Competing at EIWAs for the fourth time, senior Zeke Salvo (Baltimore, Md.) came in sixth place at 141 pounds, defeating a pair of seeded opponents in the consolation on his way to place-winner status. He posted a fall in 3:33 against JP Ascolese of Columbia on Saturday.
Juniors Tucker Ziegler (Myersville, Md.) and Ian Butterbrodt (North Andover, Mass.) completed Brown's group of six place winners, finishing in eighth place at 197 and 285 pounds respectively.
In the team standings, Brown finished 10th out of 16 teams with 50 points. Lehigh took the team title with 164.5 points, topping second-place Cornell (146 points) and third-place Princeton (93 points).

Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) and LaFragola (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) both went 2-0 at 157 and 184 pounds respectively to advance to the semifinals and earn automatic qualifying spots into the NCAA Championships. NCAAs will take place from Mar. 15-17 at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. The NCAA will announce the full field on Mar. 6 and unveil the brackets on Mar. 7.
The No. 3 seed, Staudenmayer qualified for the NCAA Championships for the third time and placed at EIWAs for the second time. The No. 5 seed, LaFragola advanced to the NCAAs for the second straight season.
Overall, Brown advanced seven wrestlers to the quarterfinals while six Bears, including Staudenmayer and LaFragola, clinched place winner status and remain alive in competition.
Brown's four other placers included senior Zeke Salvo (Baltimore, Md.) at 141 pounds and juniors Jon Viruet (Springfield, Mass.), Tucker Ziegler (Myersville, Md.), and Ian Butterbrodt (North Andover, Mass.) at 165, 197, and 285 pounds respectively.
