BOSTON, Mass. – The Brown women's rugby team opened the spring 7s season on Saturday by winning the Plate Division at Crimson 7s at Roberto A. Mignone Field. The tournament featured host Harvard, American International, Army, Boston University, Molloy, Northeastern, Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart and West Chester.
The Bears were grouped in Pool C along with Army 1, Harvard 2 and Northeastern. Brown first squared off against Northeastern, dominating the contest from start to finish on its wat to a 26-0 win. The defense set the tone for the Bears as junior Dylan Jack (Pasadena, Calif.) and junior Elise Hinkle (Sudbury, Mass.) recorded key tackles. Freshman Marion Sellier (Palo Alto, Calif.) led the offense with three tries while junior Louise Leitao (Porto Alegre, Brazil) also added a score.
Versus the Crimson in game two, Sellier got the Bears off to a good start with a try and Brown converted the kick for a 7-0 advantage. Harvard took the lead just before the half with two tries of its own. Brown registered another try (Sellier) and conversion to retake the lead while a string of passes led to a Leitao try and a 21-10 lead. Sellier capped off the match with her third try for a 26-10 win.
In the third match versus Army, the Black Knights opened with a 5-0 lead before Sellier tied it up. Army regained an advantage and took a 12-5 lead into the break. Leitao recorded the first try of the second and Brown's conversion was good to knot the contest 12-12. Army later put in a try and added a conversion for a 19-12 lead but Sellier again responded and tied the score once the Bears were again successful on the kick. A try and conversion for Army made it 26-19 in favor of the Black Knights and they would hold on to give Brown its first loss of the tournament.
The Bears advanced to play Harvard 2 and defeated the Crimson, 26-10. Sellier led Brown with both three tries and conversions while Leitao also touched down a try.
Brown won the Plate Division when it edged Army 2 in the final match, 21-17. Sellier and Leitao repeated their performances in the Harvard 2 match, recording 3 tries and three conversions and one try, respectively.
Brown will next host the Brown 7s on Sunday, April 8 at Berylson Family Field starting at 11:00 a.m.
