
Wrestling Tops Columbia, 19-18, Falls to Hofstra, 24-18

HEMPSTEAD and NEW YORK, N.Y. – Senior Zeke Salvo and sophomore Zach Krause each registered his fifth pin of the season as Brown University wrestling topped Columbia University, 19-18, and fell to Hofstra University, 24-18, on Saturday at University Gymnasium and the Mack Physical Education Center respectively.
In a pair of EIWA duals, the Bears (6-7, 6-4 EIWA, 3-2 Ivy) never trailed against the Lions (3-14, 2-8 EIWA, 0-5 Ivy) in their second dual of the day after almost rallying to edge the Pride (10-9, 4-3 EIWA) in their first contest of the day.
With its win over Columbia, Brown posted three Ivy dual wins in a season for the first time since the 2008-09 campaign. With their 3-2 Ivy mark, the Bears tied for second in the Ivy standings, marking their highest finish since the 1996-97 season.
Salvo (Baltimore, Md.) provided the Bears with the margin they needed to defeat the Lions with his pin while Krause (Plainfield, Ill.) helped Brown tie the team score at 15-15 against the Pride.
Next, Brown begins postseason competition at the EIWA Championships at Hofstra from Mar. 3-4.
Dual 1: Hofstra 24, Brown 18
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Sophomore Zach Krause posted a pin, and junior Jon Viruet tallied a technical fall, but Brown dropped a 24-18 decision at Hofstra, on Saturday afternoon at the David S. Mack Physical Edcuation Center.
The Bears tied the team score at 15-15 behind bonus point wins from Krause (Plainfield, Ill.), Viruet (Springfield, Mass.), and junior CJ LaFragola (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) before the host Pride won the next two matches to take the dual.
Krause compiled his fifth fall of the year and his second in as many duals. Viruet notched his first technical fall of the season while LaFragola registered his third major decision. Sophomore Trey Keeley (Washington, Ill.) added a win via decision.
After the meet began at 133 pounds, Krause put Brown on the board with a pin in 2:45 against Vinny Vespa at 149 pounds.
Viruet followed with a 17-1 technical fall over Ricky Stamm at 165 pounds, bringing Brown within 12-11 in the team score. Viruet tallied a four-point near fall in each of the first and second periods on his way to the win.
LaFragola knotted the team score at 15-15 behind a 12-3 major decision over Mike Oxley at 184 pounds. He totaled five takedowns in the bout en route to the victory.
In the meet's final match-up, Keeley topped Jacob Martin, 10-3, at 125 pounds. Keeley charted a takedown and four-point near fall in the first period to jump out to a 6-0 lead.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Senior Zeke Salvo registered a fall, and sophomore Trey Keeley recorded a major decision to lead Brown to a 19-18 Ivy League dual meet win at Columbia University on Saturday afternoon at University Gymnasium.
The Bears never trailed the Lions, and Salvo (Baltimore, Md.) gave the visitors a 19-11 lead with two bouts to go in the meet to provide the visitors with enough of a margin to earn the victory.
The victory gave Brown three Ivy League dual wins in a season for the first time since the 2008-09 campaign.
Salvo posted his fifth pin of the year while Keeley (Washington, Ill.) claimed his first major decision of the season. Juniors Jon Viruet (Springfield, Mass.), CJ LaFragola (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.), and Tucker Ziegler (Myersville, Md.) all won via decision.
With the meet starting at 165 pounds, Viruet spotted Brown a 3-0 advantage with a 7-1 win over Laurence Kosoy. After a Columbia victory tied the team score at 3-3, the Bears won the next two bouts and maintained a lead the rest of the way.
LaFragola made the team score 6-3 in favor of Brown with a 3-2 win over Andrew Psomas at 184 pounds, and Ziegler extended the advantage to 9-3 with an 8-5 decision over Michael Bulkin at 197 pounds.
Keeley pushed the Bears ahead 13-8 with a 16-6 major decision triumph at 125 pounds. After Columbia pulled within 13-11, Salvo pinned JP Ascolese in 3:59 at 141 pounds to extend Brown's lead to 19-11.
