
No. 16 Men’s Water Polo Closes 3-1 Weekend with 11-3 Win over No. 19 San Jose St.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Senior Travis Bouscaren scored a team-high three goals, and sophomore goalkeeper Riad Hallal made 12 saves as No. 16 Brown University men's water polo beat No. 19 San Jose State University, 11-3, on Sunday morning at Santa Clara University's Sullivan Aquatic Center.
Playing in their fourth and final game at the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament, the Bears (15-10) used a 6-0 run spanning the third and fourth quarters to pull away from the nationally ranked Spartans (6-12).
Brown closed out its trip to the Golden State with a 3-1 record behind victories over San Jose State, No. 18 Loyola Marymount (13-12), and Fresno Pacific (12-7) and a narrow setback to No. 15 Cal Baptist (11-10).
Alongside the hat trick for Bouscaren (Cambridge, Mass.), junior Hudson Rawlings (Murrieta, Calif.) totaled two goals, an assist, and four ejections drawn. Sophomore Aidan Reilly (Los Angeles, Calif.) posted two goals and an assist.
Junior Armen Deirmenjian (Beverly Hills, Calif.) registered a goal, three assists, two steals, and two field blocks while freshman Andrew Penner (Atherton, Calif.) notched a goal, two steals, and two ejections drawn.
Freshmen Gabe Kaplan (Santa Monica, Calif.) and Stephen Salle (Chadds Ford, Pa.) each netted a goal, and fellow rookie Niko Bhatia (Los Altos, Calif.) contributed three steals and two field blocks.
With a dozen saves, Hallal (Coronado, Calif.) allowed just one goal in the first half and permitted just two goals in the second half.
Rawlings opened the game's scoring with back-to-back goals before the Spartans got on the board. A goal from Bouscaren staked Brown to a 3-1 edge at the end of the first quarter.
Deirmenjian and Bouscaren accounted for the second quarter's only goals as the Bears shut out SJSU in the period and led 5-1 at the intermission.
Following a San Jose State goal to start the second half, the Bears netted six unanswered goals to pull ahead 11-2 with 7:42 left in the fourth quarter. As part of the run, Reilly scored a pair of goals while Bouscaren, Penner, Salle, and Kaplan posted one goal apiece. SJSU notched the game's final goal with 5:36 left.
Next, Brown returns to Northeast Water Polo Conference play with home match-ups on Sunday, Oct. 28 against Iona (10:00 a.m.) and St. Francis Brooklyn (2:00 p.m.) at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
