Football Returns Home To Host Cornell on Family Weekend

Providence, R.I. - Brown kicks-off its stretch run of five straight Ivy League games on Saturday, October 20, with a Family Weekend match-up against Cornell at Brown Stadium. At halftime, Brown will recognize its 18 inductees and one team, who will be inducted into the Brown Athletics Hall of Fame later Saturday evening, including former Bears' football All-American and Ivy League Player of the Year Nick Hartigan '06. Follow all the action on ESPN+ and WPRV AM 790 radio starting at 1:00 pm.

Brown's Record: Brown (1-4, 0-2 Ivy) went up against its second straight nationally ranked team, falling to #21 Princeton, 48-10, at Princeton Stadium. Bears' freshman Allen Smith(Waterville, OH) scored the Bears' lone touchdown against the Tigers on a 13 yard run.

Cornell's Record:The Big Red (2-3, 1-1 Ivy) had their two game winning streak snapped last Saturday at Colgate, falling to the Red Raiders, 31-0.

Brown vs. Cornell – 66^th Meeting: Brown and Cornell have met 65 times, dating back to 1895, with the Bears leading the series by a 37-27-1 margin. Brown has won nine of the last 10 games and 18 of the last 22 meetings between the two teams. Last year, Cornell came away with a 34-7 win over the Bears in Ithaca, NY. Brown defeated Cornell, 28-21, in 2016 at Brown Stadium.

Bear Facts:  Junior wide receiver LJ Harriott(Central Islip, NY) caught nine passes for 117 yards vs. Princeton, both career highs…Freshman kicker Dylan Brady(Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) has booted 5-of-6 field goals on the season, including a  36 yard boot last week against Princeton… Sophomore safety Chima Amushie(Richmond, TX) ranks 19^thin the nation with 6.8 solo tackles per game. He made nine tackles vs. URI…. Brown senior tri-captain Christian Montano(Orange, CT) is among 179 football student-athletes, including seven other Ivy League standouts, to be named semifinalists for the 2018 William V. Campbell Trophy, presented by Fidelity Investments®. The award recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation. ..Senior linebacker Daniel Aidman(Austin, TX) leads the Bears with 45 total tackles. He had 12 tackles vs. URI…Freshman Allen Smith (Westerville, OH) scored his second touchdown of the season with a 13-yard run vs. Princeton.

McGovern Runs The Offense:Sophomore Michael McGovern(St. Louis, MO), who had a terrific spring and fall pre-season, took over as Brown's starting quarterback in the Bears' opener vs. Cal Poly and has shown continued improvement in every game. McGovern ranks 22^ndnationally in completions with 19.6 per game. He passed for 268 yards and a touchdown, completing 23-of-42 passes, and rushed for 53 yards and a TD vs. Georgetown. He completed 22-of-43 passes for 293 yards vs. Harvard including his first two career touchdown passes of four and 29 yards. McGovern threw for 312 yards against Cal Poly, completing 25-of-50 passes, while rushing for 23 yards. He's backed-up by senior Nick Duncan(St. Louis, MO), who opened last season by leading the Bears to a victory over Bryant before suffering an injury the following week at Harvard.  Last year, Duncan completed 51-of-103 passes for 463 yards and two touchdowns.

Hoecht Leads Defensive Front:Defensive coordinator Mike Kelleher's unit is led by junior captain DE Michael Hoecht(Oakwood, OH), who leads the Bears' defensive linemen  and ranks second on the team with 40 tackles, including 4.5 tackles for a loss. He made nine tackles, including one for a loss, and blocked a field goal vs. Princeton. Hoecht had an impressive start vs. Cal Poly with 14 total tackles and made six tackles vs. #17 Rhode Island. He had 45 tackles, including 10 tackles for a loss and five QB sacks last season.

More Defensive Frontliners: Senior defensive tackle Daryle Banfield(Bronx, NY) made 18 tackles last year, including six for a loss and a QB sack. He registered eight tackles vs. Cal Poly and three vs. Harvard and Georgetown. Senior Zach Genaway(Medford, NY) made nine tackles vs. Cal Poly and four against both Harvard and Georgetown after making 10 tackles all of last season.  Genaway, who has 21 tackles on the season, made four tackles, including a quarterback sack and a blocked extra point vs. Princeton.

Offensive Line:SeniorToby Okwara(Charlotte, NC) will play a key role at center. Senior LG Logan Winders(Springfield, IL) and junior RG  Nicholas Allsop(North Easton, MA) are also mainstays of the offensive line along with junior RT Phil Lynch(Milton, MA), sophomore LT Chad Broom-Webster(Orlando, FL) and junior Jay Carnevale(North Andover, MA).

Aidman to the Rescue:Senior linebacker Daniel Aidman (Austin, TX), who leads the Bears with 45 tackles, registered nine tackles vs. Princeton. He came up with a big outing vs. Cal Poly with 14 total tackles, including six solo stops. Aidman also made six stops, including a tackle for loss vs. Harvard and had four tackles vs. Georgetown. He had 12 tackles vs. #17 Rhode Island. Last year, Aidman had  45 tackles, including 5.5 for a loss.

Amushie 19^thNationally In Solo Tackles:Sophomore defensive back Chima Amushie(Richmond, TX) ranks 19th in the nation with 5.8 solo hits per game. He had a career high nine tackles vs. Cal Poly and added seven solo stops vs. Harvard. He paced the Bears with eight solo hits vs. Georgetown  and had nine tackles, including six solo stops vs. #17 Rhode Island.

Bears Elect Captains:Senior tight end Anton Casey(Bethesda, MD), senior center Christian Montano(Orange, CT)  and junior defensive end Michael Hoecht(Oakwood, OH) have been named captains of the 2018 Brown football team.

Secondary to None:  In the secondary, senior defensive back Sebastian Dovi(Newark, DE) had a terrific sophomore season (37 tackles, two interceptions), but missed nine games last year due to injury. He missed last week's game against Princeton. Dovi intercepted his second pass of the season vs. Georgetown and ranks 13th nationally in interceptions (0.5 per game).  He registered seven tackles vs. Cal Poly, and came back with seven tackles and an interception vs. Harvard. His 22 tackles are sixth on the Brown team. Senior DB Jorquel Condomina(Naples, FL), who made two tackles vs. Cal Poly and five tackles with an interception vs. Harvard,  had an impressive 2017 season with 27 tackles, an interception and two tackles for loss.  He intercepted his second pass of the season vs. #17 URI. Sophomore  Izayah Powell(Bronx, NY) made six tackles against Cal Poly and led the Bears with eight tackles, including five solo stops vs. Harvard. He has 17 tackles for the season…Freshman Clayton Perrin(Pflugerville, TX) has seen considerable action in the secondary with 24 tackles, fifth best on the Brown team.  He made nine tackles vs. Princeton.

Brady Delivers:The place kicking duties are being handled by freshman Dylan Brady(Rancho Santa Margarita, CA), who ranks 18^thin the nation in field goal percentage (.883), converting five of six field goal attempts. Brady, who had a 36-yard field goal vs. Princeton,  booted a 27-yard field goal vs. Harvard.  He connected on all three of his field goals vs. Cal Poly on boots of 29, 23 and 30 yards.

Kopec Handles Punting Duties: Brown's punting duties will be handled by senior Ryan Kopec(Alpharetta, GA), who is is punting at a 40.1 yards per punt average. He nailed a 67-yard punt vs. #17 Rhode Island, averaging 43.1 yards per punt on eight punts.  Kopec punted for a 40.7 yards per punt average vs. Cal Poly and 40.1 yards per punt vs. Georgetown. He averaged 39.7 yards per punt last season.

Running Downfield: Freshman tailback Allen Smith(Westerville, OH) paced the Bears with 54 yards vs. Princeton, including a 13-yard touchdown run, his second of the season. He leads the Bears with 111 rushing yards on the season. Sophomore RB Darius Daies(St. Louis, MO) made some noise as a freshman, running for 95 yards and two touchdowns vs. Rhode Island.  JuniorAndrew Bolton(Troy, NY) has 78 yards on the season.

Prall On The Receiving End:  Junior Jakob Prall (Tipp City, OH),  an All-Ivy selection, led the team with 51 catches last year. Prall scored Brown's first three touchdowns vs. Georgetown, catching a three yard pass and then rushing for touchdowns of 10 and five yards. He made four catches for 62 yards vs. Cal Poly and three catches for 120 yards vs. Harvard.

Wide Receivers Catching On:  Junior Jaelon Blandburg(Orange County, CA) leads the Bears' receiving corps with 17 receptions for 184 yards. He had 33 receptions and two TD's in 2017. Blandburg made five receptions for 45 yards against Cal Poly. He paced the Bears with five catches vs. Harvard, including a four-yard touchdown reception, and had five receptions for 69 yards vs. Georgetown…Junior  Livingstone Harriott(Central Islip, NY)) returns for his junior season and can and will be used at quarterback, running back and wide receiver.  He made a career high nine catches for 117 yards vs. Princeton.  He made two catches vs. Cal Poly and Georgetown. Last year, Harriott had 21 catches, 159 receiving yards, 109 rushing yards, two TD's.

Casey Targeted:  Senior captain  Anton Casey(Bethesda, MD),  a preseason All-Ivy tight end, returns after making 14 catches for 198 yards in 2017. He made a game high six receptions for 61 yards vs. Cal Poly, and hauled in four catches for 64 yards vs. Harvard, including a 29-yard TD catch. Casey made four catches for 29 yards against Georgetown.

Brown Head Coach Phil Estes:Since Phil Estes became head coach of the Bears in 1998, his Brown football teams have captured three Ivy League titles (1999, 2005, 2008), finished second four times, third five times, and overall have finished in the top half of the Ivy League in 16 of his 20 seasons, while compiling an impressive 76-66 Ivy mark (.532), 115-89 (.560) overall. Estes' 76 career Ivy League wins are the most ever at Brown and rank sixth in the Ivy League record book, while his 115 career wins overall rank 10th all-time in the Ivy League. Estes' 204 career games coached at Brown are ninth in Ivy football history. Estes, the 19th head coach in Brown history, is the second winningest coach in Brown football history, guiding the Brown football program to an unprecedented level of success, winning three Ivy League Championships, including Brown's first ever Ivy outright title in 2005. He has also coached and recruited Brown's only four Ivy League Players of the Year – Sean Morey '99, James Perry '00, Nick Hartigan '06 and Buddy Farnham '10. In the 20 years Estes has coached on the East Side, five of his players have gone on to win Super Bowl rings. The select fraternity includes two-time champion James Develin of the New England Patriots (2014, 2016), two-time winner Zak DeOssie '07 of the New York Giants (2008, 2012), the Pittsburgh Steelers' Sean Morey (2006) and New England Patriots' Drew Inzer (2001) and Chas Gessner (2003).

All-Purpose Boylan:  Sophomore Scott Boylan(Bakersfield, CA), who made nine catches a year ago, is also a standout return specialist, who had a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown last season. Boylan rushed for a team high 47 yards vs. Cal Poly, including a 26 yard touchdown run. He also made four catches for 28 yards and returned two kickoffs 24 yards.

More Linebackers:  Junior Brendan Pyne(Bradenton, FL) ranks third on the Brown team with 38 total tackles, including 3.5 for a loss. Pyne registered nine tackles vs. Princeton. He made seven tackles, including one for a loss vs. Cal Poly and came back with seven tackles and a tackle for loss vs. Harvard and six tackles vs. Georgetown. Pyne made nine tackles vs. #17 Rhode Island.  He had 43 tackles  a year ago.  Sophomore Kingsley Ejogu-Dike(Brockton, MA), who made 22 tackles last season, made a career high nine tackles vs. Cal Poly, while forcing a fumble. He has 15 tackles on the season.

Bears In The NFL:  Brown has three of its former players on NFL rosters in 2018. Fullback James Develin '10, an engineering concentrator and defensive end at Brown, enters his sixth season with the New England Patriots. A Pro Bowl selection in 2017, Develin is the New England Patriots starting fullback for three of the last four years, including the 2014 and 2016 Super Bowl Championship teams. Zak DeOssie '07is a two-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time Super Bowl Champion (2008, 2012) for the New York Giants. Coming into the 2018 season, DeOssie is the 2nd-longest tenured Giants player, behind Eli Manning. Dewey Jarvis'17.5 made the 53-man roster of the Atlanta Falcons, just a year removed from playing at Brown. A two-time First Team All-Ivy selection, Jarvis was a finalist for the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year award in 2017.
