Wrestling Tallies Three Wins, Drops 27-9 Decision at No. 9 Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior Justin Staudenmayer and juniors Christian LaBrie and Ian Butterbrodt all picked up wins, but Brown University wrestling fell at Cornell University, 27-9, on Saturday afternoon at the Friedman Wrestling Center.
The Bears (2-5, 2-2 EIWA, 0-1 Ivy) posted back-to-back wins midway through the dual meet before the host Big Red (6-2, 2-0 EIWA, 1-0 Ivy) – winners of the last 15 Ivy League titles – took three of the last four bouts to close the day.
Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) won at 157 pounds to improve his record to 18-8 overall and 4-0 in EIWA duals on the year while Butterbrodt (North Andover, Mass.) bettered his EIWA dual mark to 3-1 on the season with a victory at 285 pounds. LaBrie (Exeter, R.I.) gained a win in his dual debut on the year.
At 157 pounds, Staudenmayer notched Brown's first points with an 11-4 decision over Fredy Stroker. He posted a 4-point near fall and takedown in the second period and a takedown in the third stanza en route to his victory.
LaBrie followed with a 20-13 win over Adam Santoro at 165 pounds, bringing Brown within 16-6 in the team score. Trailing 11-2 at the end of the first period, LaBrie scored a pair of 4-point near falls to cut his deficit to 11-10 heading to the third period. He registered an escape, takedown, reversal, and 4-point near fall on his way to the win.
Butterbrodt closed the dual with a 4-3 victory over Ben Honis at heavyweight. Facing a 3-1 deficit entering the third period, Butterbrodt recorded an escape prior to a takedown to rally for the win.
Next, Brown hosts Penn for Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 3 at noon prior to hosting Princeton on Sunday, Feb. 4 at noon as part of the team's combined meet with the Brown gymnastics program.
