
Wrestling Drops Close Decisions to American, 18-17, Maryland, 19-16

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University wrestling gained late leads in both matches but fell to American University, 18-17, via tiebreaker criteria D and to the University of Maryland, 19-16, in a pair of dual meets to close out its home-opening weekend at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Sunday.
The Bears (0-3, 0-1 EIWA) held a 17-0 lead in their first dual of the day against the Eagles (4-3, 1-1 EIWA) who came back to tie the match at 17-17 and won on the fourth tiebreaker prior to a second dual in which the hosts claimed a 16-15 edge in an eventual setback to the Terrapins (4-8, 0-6 Big Ten).
Four Bears – senior Justin Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.), junior Jon Viruet (Springfield, Mass.), and freshmen Bryce Rogers (Orlando, Fla.) and Nino Bastianelli (Marysville, Mich.) – won twice on the day. Viruet and Rogers each earned major decision wins against American.
Next, Brown competes in its first road dual meets of the year with contests at Franklin & Marshall (Jan. 20, noon), at Bucknell (Jan. 20, 6:00 p.m.), and at Lock Haven (Jan. 21, 1:00 p.m.).
Dual 1: American 18, Brown 17 (Tiebreaker Criteria D)
Brown gained the dual's first five bouts, including major decision wins for junior Jon Viruet and freshman Bryce Rogers, but American took the next five matches and won the dual on tiebreaker criteria D on Saturday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
In their Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association opener, the Bears earned a 17-0 lead in the team score through their five victories before the visiting Eagles claimed the match's final five bouts to knot the team score at 17-17. American won the match, 18-17, on tiebreaker criteria D – total near fall points scored only from decisions, major decisions, and technical falls.
Viruet (Springfield, Mass.) posted his second major decision in as many matches while Rogers (Orlando, Fla.) notched his second major decision of the year. Senior Justin Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.), sophomore Zach Krause (Plainfield, Ill.), and freshman Nino Bastianelli (Marysville, Mich.) each earned a win via decision.
With the meet starting at 149 pounds, Krause opened the dual with a 4-2 decision, tallying a reversal in the second period and a takedown in the third en route to the victory.
Staudenmayer pushed Brown's team lead to 6-0 with a 3-1 decision at 157 pounds. He scored all his points after the second period with a pair of escapes and a riding time point.
At 165 pounds, Viruet extended the hosts' edge to 10-0 with a 16-6 major decision triumph. Viruet totaled six takedowns, a reversal, an escape, and a riding time point in the win.
Rogers made the team score 14-0 behind a 14-6 major decision win at 174 pounds. With the score tied 2-2 entering the third period, Rogers tallied 12 points on three takedowns, a 4-point near fall, an escape, and a riding time point to gain his final margin.
At 184 pounds, Bastianelli picked up a 2-0 win to give Brown a 17-0 lead. He notched an escape in the second period and tacked on a point for riding time.
In the fourth tiebreaker, American took the match with an 8-4 edge in total near fall points.

Dual 2: Maryland 19, Brown 16
Brown rallied with five straight wins to turn a 15-0 deficit in the team score into a 16-15 advantage before Maryland won the heavyweight bout to claim a 19-16 win on Saturday evening at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
After dropping the first four match-ups, including a setback via injury default, the Bears bounced back to take the lead with five unanswered victories prior to a win from Maryland's No. 6 nationally ranked Youssif Hemida at 285 pounds.
Junior Tucker Ziegler (Myersville, Md.) picked up his second major decision win of the season while senior Justin Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.), junior Jon Viruet (Springfield, Mass.), and freshmen Bryce Rogers (Orlando, Fla.) and Nino Bastianelli (Marysville, Mich.) all won via decision.
Staudenmayer began the Bears comeback with a 5-3 win at 157 pounds. He scored a takedown in the second period and added three insurance points in the third frame to seal the victory.
At 165 pounds, Viruet won for the third time in as many outings to open the dual season with an 8-2 margin. He compiled three takedowns, including two in the third period, en route to the triumph.
Rogers brought Brown within 15-9 in the team score with a 6-4 win at 174 pounds. Trailing 4-3 entering the third period, Rogers scored a late takedown and chipped in a riding time point to emerge with the win.
At 184 pounds, Bastianelli won with a 9-2 margin to trim the team score deficit to 15-12. He tallied a takedown in the first period and a reversal and 4-point near fall in the second period to jump out to an 8-0 lead in the bout.
Ziegler gave Brown a 16-15 advantage in the team score with an 11-3 major decision win at 197 pounds. He totaled a reversal in the opening frame, a reversal and a 4-point near fall in the second stanza, and a takedown in the final frame alongside a riding time point.
