PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Brown field hockey team was defeated by Drexel, 2-1, at Buckley Field on Friday night. Freshman Anagha Nayak (Ann Arbor, Mich.) recorded the lone goal for the Bears, as the rookie has scored in three-straight games to open the season and her collegiate career.
Drexel (3-2) registered the first goal of the game at 9:19 of the first half as Megan Wiest scored to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead. Later in the period, junior Katie Hammaker (Ephrata, Pa.) made a pair of saves following a Drexel corner but Tess Horan was able to give the Dragons a 2-0 advantage by putting back a rebound at 26:37.
Junior Rachel Lanouette (Windham, N.H.) had a solid scoring chance for the Bears at 32:12 while on a penalty corner but her shot glanced off the post. The Dragons concluded the opening frame with a 9-5 lead in shots while the Bears had the penalty corner edge at 4-2.
Brown (0-3) got on the board and pulled to within one at 57:33 when Anagha Nayak registered a tally. With the momentum, Brown pushed for the game-tying goal but the Drexel defense thwarted off further damage to seal the victory.
Hammaker registered a scoreless second half and finished the contest with a combined six saves while her counterpart, Erin Gilchrist, came up with a total of four saves for the Dragons.
Drexel ended the game with a 16-8 lead in shots while Brown had a narrow advantage in corners at 6-5.
With tonight's goal, Anagha Nayak has found the back of the net on all three of her collegiate shots, with the rookie notching a goal in each game on the year.
Brown will continue non-conference play and travel to Monmouth on Sunday, Sept. 10 for a 12:00 p.m. contest at "So Sweet a Cat" Field.
