PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's ice hockey head coach Bob Kenneally '90 announced the addition of Doug Michals as a volunteer assistant coach to the program, specilaizing with goalies, on Tuesday.
"We are so excited to have Doug as part of the women's hockey staff", said Kenneally. "His experience and background working with elite goaltenders will serve our three goalies extremely well."
Michals comes to College Hill after serving as the interim head men's hockey coach at Franklin Pierce for the 2016-17 season.
Since 2004, Michals has worked as a head trainer at Michals Hockey Academy, an organization he co-founded. The Academy works with beginner goalies just learning to skate to junior hockey players and NCAA student-athletes. In addition to the Academy, Michals has co-founded three hockey programs, the Goalie Academy of Boston (1998), the New England Pride Hockey Club (2011) and Middlesex Cross Ice Hockey (2012).
Michals has also spent time as the goaltending coach for the Hershey Jr. Bears, Rivers Country Day School, and Nobles and Greenough School.
A four-year member of the men's ice hockey team at the University of Connecticut, Michals was named the team's MVP in 1992-93 when he posted a 19-6-2 mark in goal for the Huskies. The 19 wins for a goaltender still stands tied for the program's single-season record, while his 38 career wins (38-14-5) ranks sixth in program history.
A native of Westwood, Mass., Michals graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1995, with a bachelor's degree in sociology.
