SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Senior Tommy Bush scored three goals, and sophomore Armen Deirmenjian netted the game-winning goal with 1:56 left to lift No. 19 Brown University men's water polo to an 11-10 win over No. 18 California Baptist University on Friday afternoon at the Sullivan Aquatic Center.
In their first game at Santa Clara University's Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament, the Bears (12-9) finished the game on a 3-1 run to defeat the Lancers (16-11) for the second time this season. A total of 11 goals have now decided the Bears' last 10 contests.
Bush (Lafayette, Calif.) paced the Bears with his hat trick while Deirmenjian (Beverly Hills, Calif.) and seniors Rico Burke (San Mateo, Calif.) and Tyler Kirchberg (Orinda, Calif.) each scored two goals. Senior Austin Hwang (Laguna Hills, Calif.) and sophomore Galen Hu (Colleyville, Texas) registered one goal apiece.
Junior goalkeeper Will Renken (South Pasadena, Calif.) made 12 saves and four steals.
Trailing 9-8 with less than four minute to play, Burke scored to knot the game at 9-9. After the Lancers went ahead 10-9, Kirchberg equalized the score at 10-10 with 3:15 to play. Deirmenjian put the Bears up for good with his goal with 1:56 remaining.
Kirchberg opened the game's scoring before CBU scored twice to take a 2-1 lead after one quarter.
The Bears outscored the Lancers 3-1 in the second quarter, bringing a 4-3 edge into halftime. Bush started the second stanza's scoring before CBU gained a 3-2 lead. Hwang and Deirmenjian each scored inside of the half's final two minutes to give Brown a one-goal margin at the break.
Despite a goal from Hu, the Bears fell behind 6-5 with 4:18 to go in the third quarter as the Lancers used a 3-1 run to start the second half. A pair of goals from Bush on either side of a CBU tally tied the score at 7-7 heading to the fourth quarter.
Following a CBU goal, Burke netted a marker to draw Brown level at 8-8 with 5:53 to play. CBU re-gained the lead at 9-8 before Burke once again tied the game with 3:52 left, starting a 3-1 rally that saw the Bears capture an advantage for the first time since early in the third quarter behind goals from Kirchberg and Deirmenjian.
Brown beat CBU for the second time this season after taking a 9-6 win at home at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Sept. 2.
