
Brown Football Drops 32-22 Decision to No. 19 Harvard in Ivy League Opener

Providence, R.I. – Senior quarterback Kyle Moreno threw for 302 yards and three touchdowns, including two scores to classmate Troy Doles, but Brown football dropped a 32-22 decision to No. 19 Harvard before a Homecoming crowd of 8,174 at Brown Stadium in both teams' Ivy League opener on Saturday afternoon.
The Bears (1-1, 0-1 Ivy) remained within two scores of the visiting Crimson (2-0, 1-0 Ivy) throughout the game, but Harvard registered all four of its touchdowns on the ground to take the 116th meeting between the two teams.
Doles (Saratoga, CA) was the brightest star of the offense with touchdown catches of 20 and 24 yards, while making seven receptions overall for 99 yards. Senior Alexander Jette (North Attleboro, Mass.) caught six passes for 79 yards, and classmate Garrett Swanky (Los Angeles, CA) hauled in eight passes for 59 yards and a touchdown.
Moreno (Pleasanton, CA) completed 31-of-49 passes in tossing for over 300 yards against the Crimson for the second consecutive year. Junior Jalen Broome (University Park, MD) led the Bears' rushing attack with 37 yards on 11 carries.
Senior linebacker William Twyman (Sudbury, MA) paced the Brown defense with eight tackles, two for loss, and a sack. Seniors Max Tylki (Wethersfield, CT) and Robert Hughes (Long Valley, NJ) each registered a sack while senior Richard Jarvis (Watertown, MA) and sophomore Josh Greene (Fayeteville, GA) each recovered a fumble.
Brown got on the scoreboard first, grabbing an early 3-0 lead, when junior Jacob Wilner (Dallas, TX) booted his first career field goal with11:18 left in the opening quarter. Brown's defense kept the Crimson off the scoreboard in the opening 15 minutes.
The Crimson took their first lead, 7-3, when Semar Smith broke a tackle and ran into the end zone from two yards out at the 13:52 mark of the second quarter, capping a 49-yard scoring drive.
Crimson quarterback Joe Viviano scored on a 7-yard run with 10:05 left in the quarter for a 13-3 Harvard lead. The two-point conversion gave the Crimson a 15-3 advantage.
Following a Harvard interception that brought the ball to the Brown 20-yard line, Crimson kicker Jake McIntyre booted a 21-yard field goal for an 18-3 lead.
The Bears needed a big play to get back in the game and got one from Twyman, who took the direct snap in punt formation on a fourth down play and ran 18 yards for a first down to the Bears' 37-yard line.
Brown capped off an 84-yard scoring drive with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Moreno to Doles with 3:30 remaining in the half.
Harvard answered the Brown score with an 83-yard scoring drive, taking a 25-10 lead at the half on a 2-yard run by Viviano.
Doles caught his second touchdown pass of the game, this time a 24-yard reception from Moreno that cut Harvard's lead to 25-16 with 2:38 left in the third quarter.
Following an unsuccessful onside kick by the Bears that was recovered by Brown, but didn't travel the necessary 10 yards, Harvard took over at the Bears' 49-yard line. Four plays later, Smith scored again for the Crimson, running outside from the nine-yard line for a 32-16 lead after three quarters.
Still trailing 32-16 in the fourth quarter, Brown forced a three and out from Harvard after a pair of sacks from Hughes and Twyman. Moreno then engineered a 6-play, 76-yard drive in1:56 that resulted in an 8-yard touchdown pass to Swanky. After an unsuccessful two-point conversion, Harvard remained ahead 32-22 with 3:54 to play.
The Crimson forced a final turnover on downs for the Bears with 1:18 to play.
Brown travels to Kingston, Rhode Island on Saturday, October 1, 2016, to face the University of Rhode Island in the 101st renewal of the Governor's Cup football game between the two Rhode Island colleges. Game time is 12 noon at Meade Stadium.
