Volleyball Falls to Yale in Ivy League Opener, 3-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior setter Sarah Lucenti registered a match-high 30 assists, but Brown University volleyball fell to Yale University, 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-19), in the Ivy League opener for both teams at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Friday night.
The Bears (2-9, 0-1 Ivy) made late runs in each set, but the visiting Bulldogs (8-2, 1-0 Ivy) – Ivy League champions in each year from 2010-14 and NCAA participants in each year from 2011-14 – countered in all three frames to win the match in straight sets.
Lucenti (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) dished out 30 or more assists in a match for the third time this season. Junior Shirin Tooloee (San Jose, Calif.) tallied a team-high 10 kills while freshman Makena Ehlert (Orange County, Calif.) followed her with nine kills. Both Tooloee and Ehlert logged seven digs.
Junior libero Melissa Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) posted a team-best 13 digs, sophomore Elisa Merten (Woodside, Calif.) added eight digs, and sophomore Sabrina Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) tacked on seven kills.
In the opening set, Brown remained within 15-12 before Yale used a 6-1 run to pull ahead 21-13. The Bears answered with seven unanswered points to cut their deficit to 21-20. The Bulldogs took four of the last five points to win the set, 25-21. In the period, Tooloee landed five kills, Lucenti passed out 10 assists, and Cairo and Merten each had five digs.
Yale grabbed a 9-2 edge in set two and remained ahead at 17-10. Brown then went on a 7-2 run to trim the visitors' margin to 19-17. Yale claimed the stanza's final six points to take the set, 25-17. Stillwell, Ehlert, and Tooloee all notched three kills in the set.
The Bears trailed at just 10-9 early in set three before Yale captured a 15-10 advantage on a 5-1 streak. Brown came within 19-16 and 22-19 late in the frame before the Bulldogs scored the last three points to seize a 25-19 win in the decisive frame. Lucenti chalked up 14 assists in the period with Stillwell terminating on four kills and Cairo making six digs.
For Yale, Megan Rasmussen and Tristin Kott tied for the match high with 11 kills apiece. Kelsey Crawford paced the team with 18 assists, and Brittani Steinberg recorded a match-best 15 digs.
Next, Brown plays its first road Ivy League contests of the season at Cornell on Friday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. and at Columbia on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 5 p.m.
