
Volleyball Falls to Binghamton in Spike ALS Match, 3-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University volleyball knotted the match at one set apiece with a second set win, but Binghamton University took the final two sets to gain a 3-1 (25-22, 15-25, 25-17, 25-13) win in the Bears' Spike ALS Match at the Brown Invitational on Friday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
In the opening match of the Brown Invitational for both teams, the Bears (1-7) countered with their 25-15 win in set two before the visiting Bearcats (5-6) claimed control of the match over the final two stanzas.
Sophomore Sabrina Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) and freshman Makena Ehlert (Orange County, Calif.) each landed a team-high eight kills with Ehlert adding 10 digs.
The match served as the Bears' Spike ALS Match as Brown works to support research and awareness for ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. The Bears donned red apparel for the match in support of the cause.
ALS has affected the family of Brown head coach Diane Short with Coach Short's mother and aunt both passing away from the disease. Gene Garceau, an ALS patient and the brother of Coach Short, spoke to the team and other supporters at the conclusion of the match. In the opening set, with both teams tied at 14-14, Binghamton used a 4-0 run to pull ahead 18-14. Brown cut its deficit to 22-20 late in the frame before the Bearcats emerged with a 25-22 set win. Ehlert terminated on six kills on .500 hitting in the stanza.
Brown responded in set two, using a 5-0 streak to pull ahead 13-8. The Bears extended their lead to 18-10 before closing out the 25-15 set win on a 6-1 run. In the period, junior Shirin Tooloee (San Jose, Calif.) notched four kills on .500 hitting, Merten passed out seven assists, and Ehlert came up with five digs.
Binghamton moved ahead 2-1 in sets with a 25-17 victory in the third frame. The Bearcats scored six straight points to increase their lead from 14-12 to 20-12 on the way to the set win.
The Bearcats pulled ahead 11-4 early in the fourth set and later built their lead to 20-7 behind a 7-1 stretch. The visitors concluded the match with a 25-15 win in the frame. Cairo tallied eight digs in the stanza.
For Binghamton, Kristella Morina posted 12 kills on .611 hitting with six blocks, Lauren Kornmann finished with 11 kills, Sarah Ngo dished out a match-best 36 assists, and Bailey Walker notched 12 digs.
In the first match of the tournament on Friday afternoon, New Mexico State defeated Central Connecticut State, 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-21). Jordan Abalos registered 22 kills alongside 13 digs for the Aggies.
Next, Brown concludes play at the Brown Invitational tomorrow against Central Connecticut State (12:30 p.m.) and New Mexico State (7:00 p.m.).
