
Wrestling Tops Roger Williams, Falls to Harvard at Beauty and the Beast Meet

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University wrestling earned a 24-17 win over Roger Williams University after dropping a 25-10 decision to Harvard University in the Bears' second Beauty and the Beast meet alongside Brown gymnastics on Sunday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
The Bears (4-10, 2-8 EIWA) topped the visiting Hawks (22-2) after falling to their Ivy and EIWA foe Crimson (6-4, 4-3 EIWA) earlier in the afternoon before a standing-room-only crowd at the Pizzitola.
Junior Justin Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.), ranked No. 20 at 157 lbs. according to Intermat, led Brown with two wins on the day, notching bonus points in both victories and increasing his season win total to 25. Seven other Bears won bouts on the day.
On the other side of the gym, Brown gymnastics scored a season-high 194.000 in a dual meet with the University of Bridgeport, which posted a 194.825.
Next, Brown hosts Hofstra for Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 1 p.m. in its regular season finale.
Dual 1: Harvard 25, Brown 10
Junior Steven Galiardo (Chicago, Ill.) and Staudenmayer won back-to-back bouts to pull Brown within 13-10 before Harvard claimed the last four bouts in its 25-10 win.
Opening the match in the heavyweight division, sophomore Josh Durso-Finley (Lawrenceville, N.J.) gained a 2-1 win over Angus Cowell in a tiebreaker session. Durso-Finley posted an escape in the third period and added an escape in the tiebreaker.
At 149 lbs., Galiardo earned an 11-4 win over Patrick Hogan to bring Brown within 13-6 in the team score. Galiardo led 2-1 after the first period and increased his edge to 4-2 through two stanzas. He posted a takedown, a 4-point near fall, and a riding time point to ensure the victory.
Staudenmayer shut out Tyler Tarsi at 157 lbs., 8-0, to cut the Bears' deficit to 13-10. Staudenmayer scored a takedown and 4-point near fall in the opening period and tacked on an escape in each of the second and third frames.
Sophomore Michael Russo (Jersey City, N.J.) dropped a 2-1 decision at 125 lbs., classmate Andrew LaBrie (Exeter, R.I.) fell 3-1 in sudden victory at 174 lbs., and senior Augustus Marker (Castle Rock, Colo.) lost in sudden victory, 13-7, at 197 lbs.

Junior William McDonald (Carson City, Nev.) won via fall, Staudenmayer took a technical fall victory, and Russo won via major decision to lead Brown to a 24-17 victory over Roger Williams.
Russo posted Brown's first team points with a 10-2 major decision over Nick Barbaria at 125 lbs. He opened the bout with six points in the first period and charted four points the rest of the way.
Sophomore Charlie Banaszak (Bethesda, Md.) won at 141 lbs. against Justin Cochran, 3-0. Banaszak scored a takedown in the first and an escape in the second period.
McDonald posted his fall in 1:34 against Thomas Carta at 149 lbs. to push Brown to a 13-9 lead in the team score. Staudenmayer followed with a technical fall, 18-2, over Carter Merecki, tallying three straight 4-point near falls to seal the win.
Sophomore Christian LaBrie (Exeter, R.I.) grabbed a 6-3 win over Alec Golner at 165 lbs., and twin brother Andrew LaBrie followed with a 3-2 win at 174 lbs. to push the hosts ahead 24-9.
