CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Brown women's rugby team was defeated by Princeton, 41-24, on Sunday afternoon at Roberto A. Mignone Field.
With Princeton driving early in the first half, senior Gwynedd Kieffer (Ambler, Pa.) made a try line tackle, but Princeton was eventual able to punch it in and go up 5-0. The Tigers added another try to take a 10-0 lead when they overturned the ball for a 40m run.
The Bears got on the board with a try from junior Beth Clifton (Attleboro, Mass.) with senior Hannah Yi (Los Angeles, Calif.) and junior Bethany Dubois (Newtown, Conn.) moving the ball well. Clifton then connected on her kick to pull the Bears within three (10-7).
Princeton got back on the board with a try and successful kick to increase its lead to 17-7. Sophomore Elise Hinkle (Sudbury, Mass.) answered by running the ball back 40m for a try (17-12) to close the scoring for the first half.
The Tigers opened the second with a try, to take a 22-12 advantage. The game continued to be back-and-forth as junior Nikkolette Lee (Churchville, N.Y.) registered a try for the Bears, to pull within a try of the Tigers (22-17).
Princeton quickly responded with a try for a 29-17 lead. Hinkle followed with her second try of the afternoon and Clifton's kick was good as the Bears again moved to within a try (29-24).
Princeton later increased its advantage to 10 (34-24) with a try.
The Bears had a chance to score with time running down, when they were 10m away from the try zone, but Princeton was able to stop Brown and eventually score a try and a conversion kick for the final score of 41-24.
