
Smith, Stillwell Propel Volleyball Past Penn, 3-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Payton Smith recorded a season-high 17 kills on .607 hitting, and sophomore Sabrina Stillwell landed a season-best 16 kills on .406 hitting to lead Brown University volleyball to a 3-1 (25-17, 19-25, 25-20, 25-19) win over the University of Pennsylvania on Friday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
The Bears (5-16, 3-8 Ivy) posted a .343 hitting percentage in the match, hitting .424 and .545 in the third and fourth sets respectively, in upending the visiting Quakers (10-13, 5-6 Ivy).
Smith (Atherton, Calif.) notched her 17 kills on 28 attempts with no errors to go with five blocks while Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) finished with just three errors on 32 swings.
Senior Sarah Lucenti (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) tallied her fifth double-double of the season on 29 assists and 10 digs, and sophomore Elisa Merten (Woodside, Calif.) logged her second double-double of the year behind 24 assists and 18 digs.
Junior libero Melissa Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) notched 20 digs – her eighth match this year with 20 or more digs – senior Emma Thygesen (Menlo Park, Calif.) charted 15 digs, sophomore Makena Ehlert (Orange County, Calif.) totaled 14 digs and nine kills, and freshman Jacqueline Jacobs (Atlanta, Ga.) terminated on seven kills on .667 hitting.
Brown jumped out to a 10-3 lead in set one and grabbed its first double-digit margin at 17-7 behind a 6-0 run. The Bears maintained at least a six-point edge the rest of the way in taking a 25-17 set win. Smith landed seven kills on 10 swings with no errors in the set while Stillwell had five kills on .556 hitting, and Cairo had nine digs.
In set two, the Quakers built leads of 15-11 and 21-14 before the Bears used a 4-0 spurt to pull within 21-18. Penn then took four of the last five points to win the set, 25-19. Stillwell registered four kills in the stanza while Cairo added seven digs.
A tight set three saw 10 ties and three lead changes with the two sides deadlocked at 19-19 late in the set. The Bears responded, claiming six of the last seven points, to gain the frame, 25-20. In the period, Smith tallied six kills on eight swings with no errors (.750 hitting).
In the fifth set, Brown captured a 12-7 edge and remained ahead 18-13 midway through the stanza. Penn cut its deficit to 20-18, but Brown countered with a 5-1 streak to win the set, 25-19. Stillwell tacked on five kills with no errors on seven attempts in the frame while Merten contributed nine assists and six digs.
For Penn, Caroline Furrer charted a double-double on 12 kills and 19 digs, Sydney Morton dished out a match-best 37 assists, and libero Michelle Pereira made 18 digs.
Brown and Penn split the season series, 1-1, after the Quakers came up with a 3-0 win in Philadelphia on Oct. 15.
Next, Brown hosts Princeton tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 5, at 5:00 p.m. in the Bears' final home match of the season.
