
Merten Tallies Triple-Double, Volleyball Falls to Dartmouth, 3-2

HANOVER, N.H. – Sophomore Elisa Merten registered a triple-double on 10 kills, 15 assists, and 27 digs, but Brown University volleyball fell to Dartmouth College, 3-2 (17-25, 24-26, 25-18, 25-16, 15-12) on Friday evening at Leede Arena.
The Bears (5-18, 3-10 Ivy) took a 2-0 set lead after winning in the second set in extra points before the host Big Green (9-15, 2-11 Ivy) came back to win each of the next three frames to take the match.
Merten (Woodside, Calif.) tallied her first collegiate triple-double on career highs in kills and digs.
Senior Payton Smith (Atherton, Calif.) posted her sixth match this year with double-figure kills, notching a match-high 14 kills. Freshman Jacqueline Jacobs (Atlanta, Ga.) tallied a match and season-high nine blocks.
Junior libero Melissa Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) logged a match-best 28 digs for her ninth match this year with 20 or more digs, and senior setter Sarah Lucenti (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) dished out a match-high 27 assists.
Freshman Makena Ehlert (Orange County, Calif.) contributed a season-high 21 digs, and senior Emma Thygesen (Menlo Park, Calif.) totaled her third match this year with double-digit digs on 11 digs.
Brown gained a 15-11 edge midway through set one, remained ahead at 21-16, and finished the opening frame with a 25-17 win.
After Dartmouth opened with a 12-6 lead in the second set, Brown answered with six straight points to knot it at 12-12. The Big Green regained the lead and still led 22-19 prior to Brown pulling ahead 24-22 with a 5-0 burst. The hosts tied the score at 24-24 before the Bears took the last two points.
The Big Green gained a 12-8 advantage to start set three and held onto a 17-15 edge later in the frame. The Bears kept within 21-18 before Dartmouth won four of the last five points to capture the set, 25-19, and avoid elimination.
The hosts grabbed a15-11 lead midway through the fourth frame and claimed a 20-13 advantage with a 5-0 streak. Dartmouth seized the frame, 25-16, closing the stanza on a 10-3 run and tying the match in sets, 2-2.
In the decisive frame, Brown held an 8-7 lead at the switch and pushed ahead 11-9. Dartmouth then won the next four points and six of the final seven points to win the fifth set, 15-12, and complete the comeback.
For Dartmouth, Molly Konrfeind landed a team-high 12 kills, Julia Lau came up with a team-best 21 digs, and Zoe Leonard passed out a team-high 22 assists to go with 16 digs. Emily Astarita compiled a double-double on 18 digs and a11 kills.
Next, Brown closes its season at Harvard tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 12, at 5:00 p.m.
