
No. 10 Men's Water Polo Tops No. 20 Loyola Marymount in Overtime, 12-11

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Junior Tyler Kirchberg scored a team-high four goals, including the game winner in overtime, as No. 10 Brown University men's water polo defeated No. 20 Loyola Marymount University, 12-11, in its final game at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational on Sunday morning at the Sullivan Aquatic Center.
The Bears (16-6) withstood multiple rallies from the Lions (7-13) and outscored LMU, 2-1, in overtime to finish their weekend at "The Rodeo" with a 4-0 record.
After LMU took its first lead at 10-9 late in the fourth quarter, Kirchberg (Orinda, Calif.) tied the game at 10-10 with 1:02 to play in regulation to force overtime. The Lions went ahead 11-10 to open overtime, but a goal from senior Luke Irwin (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) in the first bonus session and a tally from Kirchberg in the second overtime period propelled the Bears to the victory.
Irwin finished the game with three goals while senior Yahel Murvitz-Lahav (Tel Aviv, Israel) tallied two goals and an assist. Senior Jake Wyatt (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) dished out four assists, and senior Warren Smith (Dallas, Texas), junior Rico Burke (San Mateo, Calif.), and freshman Hudson Rawlings (Murrieta, Calif.) each netted one goal apiece.
In net, senior goalkeeper Luke Weiser (Los Alamitos, Calif.) made 14 saves and added an assist.
Brown took a 7-4 lead at halftime after outscoring LMU, 4-1, in the second quarter. Irwin started the period's scoring with a power play goal before Smith also scored on the advantage. After a Lion marker, Burke and Kirchberg scored in the stanza's final 1:39.
The Lions started the second half with three straight goals to tie the score at 7-7. Brown answered as Murvitz-Lahav and Rawlings each found the back of the net to push Brown ahead, 9-7, through three quarters.
LMU used another 3-0 run to gain its first lead at 10-9 with 1:11 to play in regulation. Kirchberg responded just nine seconds later, returning the game to a tie at 10-10 with 1:02 left in the fourth quarter.
After the Lions gained an 11-10 edge 49 seconds into the first part of overtime, Irwin countered with a goal with 1:01 remaining in the first session. Kirchberg's goal with 1:21 to go in the second part of overtime sealed the win.
In the first quarter, Irwin, Murvitz-Lahav, and Kirchberg netted one goal apiece as the sides remained level at 3-3 after the first frame.
For LMU, Dayne Jagga scored a game-high six goals.
Next, Brown plays at Conn. College on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. prior to returning home for a pair of NWPC games on Saturday, Oct. 29 against No. 10 Harvard (1:00 p.m.) and MIT (6:00 p.m.).
