PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Matthew Chow (Vancouver, British Columbia) buried a penalty kick early in the second half as the Brown men's soccer team blanked Cornell, 1-0, in Ivy League action Sunday at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Brown (7-6-1, 2-1-1) outshot Cornell (1-11-2, 0-4) by a 10-5 margin.
Senior keeper Erik Hanson (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) posted two saves for his fourth shutout of the season, while Ryan Shellow stopped four shots for the Big Red.
Brown outshot the Big Red, 5-0, in the opening 45 minutes. Tyler Long (Clarksville, Tenn.) and Chow recorded a pair of bids on target, but neither team was able to generate much offense for the scoreless first half.
After Nate Pomeroy (Groton, Mass.) was taken down in the box in the 46th minute, Chow stepped up and buried the penalty kick for his fifth tally of the season, giving the home side the one-goal advantage.
Chow registered five shots in the game, including three on target, and also rattled a shot off the crossbar nearly ten minutes after his goal.
The Big Red had five shots in the second half. Allen Michael Capo had the team's first quality look in the 66th minute, but Hanson stretched out for the save to maintain the advantage.
Brown held the Big Red to without a shot during the final 13 minutes to seal the victory. The two teams were even in corner kicks, 5-5.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, Oct. 29 at Penn (7:30 PM).
