
Women's Hockey Opens Season with 6-3 Win Over Sacred Heart

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's hockey team opened the 2016-17 season with a 6-3 win over Sacred Heart on Friday night in a non-conference game at Meehan Auditorium. Twelve different Bears made the stat sheet, with sophomore Katie Lynch (Victoria, Minn.) and rookies Alley Rempe (Calgary, Alberta) and Sena Hanson (New Brighton, Minn.) recording their first-career points.
The Bears scored its first goal of the year shortly into the game, at 2:19, when Lynch registering the tally. Junior Samantha Swanstrom (Ham Lake, Minn.) started the play when she fought off two defenders for the puck. Hanson then collected the puck and fed it to Lynch who was crashing to the crease and deflected the puck in for a 1-0 lead.
Sacred Heart was quick to respond, evening the score just 12 seconds later (2:31) when Brittany Smith picked off a pass and moved the puck to Taylor Moreland who scored the breakaway goal.
At 12:46 of the first, A. Rempe scored while the Bears were on the power-play to regain a lead (2-1). S. Swantrom notched her second assist of the game while junior Cynthia Kyin (Stokie, Ill.) also picked up an assists.
The opening period saw the Bears come away with a 12-7 edge in shots.
Sacred Heart tied the game, 2-2, to start the second period scoring at 6:58 from Taylor Moreland.
The Bears retaliated with back-to-back scores to gain a 4-2 advantage. The first goal was from Lynch (8:02), who put back a rebound from Hanson's shot. Sophomore Leah Olson (East Harwich, Mass.) registered the second assist on the Bears' third goal. Brown's fourth goal was scored by sophomore Bridget Carey (Weymouth, Mass.) on the power play (11:02) when she found the back of the net from the slot. A. Rempe and sophomore Cara Najjar (Stoneham, Mass.) tallied the assists.
Sacred Heart pulled within one (4-3) at 13:21 with a power-play goal from Meghan Kebalka to close the second stanza's scoring. Both teams were even in shots for the period at 8-8.
The Bears distanced themselves from the Pioneers in the third, outshooting the team 17-6. Sophomore Sam Donovan (New Brighton, Minn.) scored Brown's fifth goal of the game at 4:58. A. Rempe started the play passing to Najjar, who pushed the puck to Donovan who skated from the blue line to the net, beating the Sacred Heart goalie.
Brown's sixth and final goal came when senior Maddie Woo (Plymouth, Minn.) hit the puck ahead to Jenna Hewitt-Kenda from the defensive end. Hewitt-Kenda then took a shot on net that was block away by the Pioneers' goalie. Sophomore Abby Niewchas (Cochrane, Alberta) then came speeding through the slot and put back the rebound for the goal.
Overall the Bears outshot Sacred Heart 37-21. Each team had six penalties in the game.
A. Rempe finished the contest with three points, on one goal and two assists. Lynch had two goals while Hanson, S. Swanstrom and Kyin each recorded two assists.
Senior Monica Elvin (Oakland, Calif.) concluded the game with 18 saves. Freshman Calla Isaac (Sherwood Park, Alberta) made her first collegiate appearance in net for the Bears in the third, logging 6:40. Devan Kane of Sacred Heart recorded 31 stops in goal.
The Bears close out the series against Sacred Heart tomorrow (Oct. 22) in a 3:00 p.m. game at Meehan Auditorium.
