PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown women's hockey team's third-period comeback fell short as the Bears dropped a 2-1 ECAC contest against St. Lawrence on Friday night at Meehan Auditorium. Freshman Cara Najjar (Stoneham, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal at 9:41 in the third to pull Brown within one (2-1) but the Bears were unable to generate the game-tying goal in the last minute with the goalie pulled. With the loss Brown moves to 3-12-0 overall and 1-8-0 in the ECAC, while St. Lawrence improves to 11-9-1 on the season and 5-4-0 in the league.
The opening period looked like it would end scoreless but St. Lawrence's Abbey McRae scored at 19:23 to give the Saints a 1-0 lead heading into the intermission.
St. Lawrence padded its lead in the second (2-0), with another end of the period score, this time at 18:04 by Brooke Webster.
Brown pulled within one of the St. Lawrence (2-1) in the third period. Following a faceoff in their defensive zone, junior Erin Conway (Jackson, Mich.) caused a turnover and converted a feed to sophomore Samantha Swanstrom (Ham Lake, Mich.), who took off in the neutral zone. Swanstrom fired off a shot from the right faceoff circle that bounced off of St. Lawrence goalie, Brooke Wolejko, and went to Najjar, who put home the rebound close range for her first-career goal.
The Bears pulled sophomore Julianne Landry (Hanover, Mass.) in favor of the extra skater at 1:12, but Brown was unable to score with two shots off in the stanza.
For the game, Landry registered 40 saves, her third 40-save performance of the season. Walejko finished the contest with 14 saves.
Both teams' penalty kills were perfect on the night, with Brown fending off all five of its infractions and the Saints going 2-for-2 on the kill.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow at Meehan Auditorium when they welcome No. 5/6 Clarkson for a 4:00 p.m. game.
