
Volleyball Challenges Defending Ivy Champs, Falls at Yale, 3-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman Sabrina Stillwell recorded 15 kills, but Brown University volleyball fell at defending Ivy League champion Yale University, 3-1 (25-22, 21-25, 25-15, 25-21), on Friday night at Lee Amphitheater in the Ivy opener for both teams.
The Bears (6-6, 0-1 Ivy), coming off a title at the CCSU Invitational, challenged the Bulldogs (6-4, 1-0 Ivy) in the first set and won the second frame before the hosts, who have earned at least a share of the Ivy title in each of the last five years, took the remaining two frames.
Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) logged her third match this season with 15 or more kills while senior Shannon Frost (Santa Ana, Calif.) contributed seven kills and 10 digs.
Sophomore libero Melissa Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) registered her fourth match this season with 20 or more digs, notching a match-best 21 digs in the contest.
At the setter spot, senior Rachele Killian (Laguna Beach, Calif.) and junior Sarah Lucenti (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) distributed 17 and 14 assists respectively while each compiled eight digs.
Brown pushed Yale throughout set one, not allowing the hosts to take a lead larger than two points until the frame's final score. The Bears grabbed an early 8-5 lead before both teams played within two points until the set's waning moments. The visitors led 22-21, but the Bulldogs closed the set with four straight points. Frost posted three kills in the stanza while Cairo had five digs.
Behind six kills from Stillwell, the Bears countered with a 25-21 victory in set two. Brown opened with an 11-7 edge, notching six unanswered points to take that lead. The visitors withstood multiple charges from the hosts, maintaining a 15-10 lead mid-set and a 23-18 edge late in the frame. In the stanza, Frost had three kills, Killian handed out seven assists, and Cairo made six digs.
Yale staked itself to a 2-1 set lead with a 25-15 win in set three. The Bears remained within 11-10 before the Bulldogs used a 5-0 run to take a 16-10 edge. The hosts carried a 20-15 lead late in the set and closed the frame with five consecutive points.
The visitors gained a 9-7 advantage to start the fourth set, but the hosts countered with a 9-0 stretch to capture a 16-9 lead. Brown pulled within 20-16 on a 5-0 run before Yale closed the match with a 25-21 win. Stillwell terminated on five kills in the set while Cairo picked up six digs.
Next, Brown hosts Cornell in its 2015 home opener on Friday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. prior to hosting Columbia on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 5 p.m.
