
Wrestling Drops Pair of Ivy Duals to Penn, Princeton

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. and PRINCETON, N.J. – Senior Billy Watterson won both of his bouts, but Brown University wrestling fell to the University of Pennsylvania, 29-6, and to Princeton University, 17-16, at The Palestra and Dillon Gym respectively on Saturday.
In a pair of EIWA and Ivy League matchups, the Bears (3-7, 2-4 EIWA) dropped their first dual meet of the day to the Quakers (4-5, 2-3 EIWA) before losing to the Tigers (8-5, 5-4 EIWA) despite winning five bouts.
Watterson (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) earned a pair of victories at 125 pounds while sophomore Richard Muniz (Corona, Calif.) also won his bout against Penn.
In the evening against Princeton, senior Ricky McDonald (Carson City, Nev.), junior Augustus Marker (Castle Rock, Colo.), sophomore Justin Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.), and freshman Zeke Salvo (Baltimore, Md.) each won his bout.
Next, Brown competes at Lehigh tomorrow at 2 p.m.
Meet 1 – Penn 29, Brown 6
Watterson and Muniz each won bouts as Brown fell to Penn, 29-6, at The Palestra in the afternoon.
Watterson earned an 11-4 win via decision over Jeremy Schwartz at 125 pounds to start the match. He scored three takedowns in the first period to take a 6-2 lead after the first frame.
He pushed his edge to 8-3 after two periods on the strength of a reversal and added a takedown and a point for riding time in the third stanza. With the win, Watterson improved to 15-11 overall and 7-2 in dual meets.
In his first action since Jan. 3, Muniz (Corona, Calif.) topped Quinton Hiles in the 165-pound weight class, 3-1, to bring Brown within 13-6 in the team score. He bettered his overall mark to 11-8 in his first dual bout of the year.
Muniz persevered at the end of the first period to gain a takedown and a 2-0 advantage. After an escape for Hiles in the second stanza, Muniz matched him with an escape of his own less than 30 seconds into the third period to grab the 3-1 lead.

Meet 2 – Princeton 17, Brown 16
Watterson won for the second time on the day, and McDonald picked up a major decision win, but host Princeton edged Brown, 17-16, at Dillon Gym in the evening.
Watterson gave Brown a 3-0 lead with a 2-0 victory over Ryan Cash at 125 lbs. He registered an escape in the second period and added a point for riding time.
Salvo lifted the Bears to a 6-0 edge behind a 4-0 win at 133 lbs. over Jordan Reich. He picked up all his points in the third period including an escape and a takedown.
At 157 pounds, Staudenmayer – ranked 20th in the nation according to Intermat – topped Rich Eva, 3-0. He notched a takedown in the second stanza and an escape in the third while pitching the shutout and giving Brown a 9-6 lead.
McDonald retook the lead for the Bears, 13-10, with a 12-3 major decision triumph at 174 pounds over Judd Ziegler. He totaled three takedowns and scored two near fall points twice en route to the win.
With Brown trailing 17-13 heading into the heavyweight bout, Marker worked for a 5-1 win via decision over Ray O'Donnell at 285 lbs. He tallied a reversal and a takedown in the third period.
