Wrestling's Galiardo, Staudenmayer Conclude Action at Cliff Keen Invite

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Brown University wrestling junior captains Steven Galiardo and Justin Staudenmayer completed action for the Bears at the second day of competition at the 34th Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Saturday at the Cashman Center.
Galiardo (Chicago, Ill.) and Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) each fell in the consolation bracket on Saturday morning, finishing one win shy of placing in the 149-pound and 157-pound divisions respectively. The duo ended the tournament – which included 13 teams ranked in the top 25 – with a combined five wins.
Staudenmayer, the No. 8 seed at 157 lbs., dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 3 seed Aaron Walker of The Citadel on Saturday. The two wrestlers stood tied at 1-1 with one escape apiece before Walker scored a takedown late in the third period.
At 149 lbs., Galiardo suffered an 8-2 setback to No. 8 seed Geordan Martinez of Boise State. Galiardo paced the Bears with three wins at the tournament.
Galiardo and Staudenmayer placed in both of Brown's first two events of the season – the East Stroudsburg Open and the Navy Classic. Last year at the Cliff Keen Invite, Staudenmayer placed fourth at 157 lbs.
In the team standings, Brown finished 31st out of 39 schools with 17.5 points. No. 8 Missouri won the tournament with 154 points while No. 14 Cornell finished second with 113 points.
Next, Brown will compete at the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill., from Dec. 29-30 as well as the Franklin & Marshall Open on Dec. 30.

Galiardo and Staudenmayer each advanced to the second day of competition to lead the Bears at the 34th Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Friday at the Cashman Center.
The duo combined to pick up five wins on the first day of competition while three other Bears gained victories on the day. The tournament's field includes 39 total teams with 13 teams ranked in the top 25.
At 157 lbs., Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) gained victories in each of his first two bouts to advance to the quarterfinals. He opened competition with a 4-0 win over San Francisco State's Travis Ino before edging No. 9 seed Markus Scheidel of Columbia, 3-1, in a sudden victory period. After dropping a decision to No. 1 seed Ian Miller of Kent St., he will compete tomorrow against No. 3 Aaron Walker of The Citadel in the consolation bracket.
Galiardo (Chicago, Ill.) posted a 3-1 record on the day at 149 lbs., winning three straight bouts in consolation competition. After dropping a decision to No. 12 seed Joey Delgado of Oregon St. in the round of 32, he began his streak with a 3-1 triumph over Columbia's Tyler Ponte. He followed with a pin in 2:51 over Binghamton's Frank Garcia and a 5-1 win over No. 10 seed Victor Lopez of Bucknell. Galiardo will wrestle against No. 8 Geordan Martinez of Boise St. in another consolation bout tomorrow,
Senior captain Augustus Marker (Castle Rock, Colo.) notched a 2-2 record at 197 lbs., claiming wins in his first two bouts to reach the round of 16. He pinned Harley DiLulo of Boise State in 2:41 before defeating Cal Baptist's Paul Head, 4-3. In the round of 16, he fell to No. 1 seed J'Den Cox of Missouri in 4:49.
At 165 lbs., sophomore Christian LaBrie (Exeter, R.I.) finished the day with a 2-2 mark. He opened competition with a win via fall in 1:53 over Newberry's Lukas Gilmore. After dropping a decision to No. 11 seed Tyrel White, LaBrie came back with another pin (3:22) against Jade Lloyd of Gateway Bible in the consolation bracket. LaBrie placed at the Navy Classic earlier this year.
Sophomore Michael Russo (Jersey City, N.J.) earned one bout win at 125 lbs., defeating Brant Leadbeter of Navy in consolation action via a 6-2 decision. Earlier this season, Russo placed at the East Stroudsburg Open.
When Brown completed its day, it stood in a tie for 28th in the team standings with 17.5 points.
