PRINCETON, N.J. – Freshman Jack Hagstrom (Middleton, Wis.) of the Brown men's soccer team was named the Ivy League Co-Rookie of the Year, and was joined by senior Tariq Akeel (Rochester Hills, Mich.) on the All-Ivy First Team, as five Bears earned postseason honors in a vote by the league's eight head coaches, the conference announced on Thursday.
In addition to Akeel and Hagstrom on the First Team, rookie Matthew Chow (Vancouver, British Columbia) was named to the Second Team, while seniors Jack Gorab (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Tim Whalen (Amston, Conn.) garnered Honorable Mention All-Ivy accolades.
Hagstrom is the third Rookie of the Year selection in program history and first since 2007 when Paul Granstrand took home the award. Hagstrom put together a standout freshman campaign as he paced the team in goals (5) and points (11) as a defender. The three-time Rookie of the Week selection had five points in seven Ivy League contests.
Akeel earned First Team honors for the second time in his four-year career. Akeel was second on the team with 10 points, composed of four goals and two assists, and recorded a pair of game-winning goals in league play. He finished his tenure with 12 goals and six assists for 30 career points.
Chow put together an All-Ivy season as rookie up front, scoring three goals with one assist in 16 total games. He led the Bears with three game-winning goals, including the lone goal in the victory at Cornell.
Whalen garnered All-Ivy honors for the second straight season. The team co-captain anchored a backline that posted six shutouts and ranked third in goals-against average (0.90). Whalen also added two goals and wrapped up his career with 10 points in 67 career games played, including 58 starts.
Gorab was named All-Ivy for the second time in as many years after he earned First Team honors last season. The team co-captain started all 17 games and totaled two goals and three assists for seven points. Gorab was selected as a national finalist for the Senior CLASS Award and ended his four-year career with 27 points in 68 career games played.
