PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 2-seeded Brown women's rugby team was defeated in a hard fought battle against the No. 3-seeded AIC Yellow Jackets, 27-19, in the Quarterfinals of the National Collegiate Women's Varsity Rugby Association (NCWVRA) Championship on Saturday at Marvel Field.
AIC (4-4) got on the board first, with a try to take an early 5-0 lead in the contest. Senior Kiki Morgan (Pawtucket, R.I.) soon knotted the game up at 5-5, running in for a try of her own. The Yellow Jackets responded with their second try of the match, to take a 10-5 lead. Brown (6-4) later followed with a try by junior Lauren Oxendine (Cincinnati, Ohio). The Bears converted the kick for a 12-10 lead, and carried that advantage into halftime.
The Yellow Jackets scored first in the second half to take a 15-12 lead with 25 minutes remaining. AIC followed with another score to increase its lead to 20-12. With less than 10 minutes left in the half, AIC scored again and converted its kick to take a convincing 27-12 lead. Morgan made a 50-meter run and converted a penalty try. With a successful kick, the Bears pulled within eight (27-19), but that was all the offense Brown was able to generate as its comeback fell short.
AIC will face the winner of the Quinnipiac/West Chester game in the NCWRVA Semifinals.
Brown will host the first ever NCWVRA Semifinals and Championship Game, with the semifinals on Friday, November 20 (11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.) and the final on Sunday, November 22 (1:00 p.m.) Both the semifinals and championship game are to be played at Marvel Field, located on 401 Elmgrove Avenue in Providence, R.I.
