Men's Soccer Blanks Dartmouth, 1-0, on Senior Day

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Tariq Akeel (Rochester Hills, Mich.) converted a penalty kick in the second half and the defense took care of the rest as the Brown men's soccer team blanked Dartmouth, 1-0, in the regular season finale Saturday at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Brown (10-5-2, 4-1-2) stretched its unbeaten streak to five games and spoiled Dartmouth's attempt for a perfect Ivy slate. The league champion Big Green wrapped up the regular season at 11-5-1 and 6-1-0.
Sophomore Joey Cipicchio (Columbus, Ohio) turned away six shots for his first career shutout, while Stefan Cleveland had four saves for the Big Green.
Dartmouth controlled the game in the opening stanza, outshooting the Bears by a 9-2 margin, including five shots on target. Nevertheless, Dartmouth could not capitalize on several good looks, including at shot by Justin Donawa that was tipped by Cipicchio and then deflected off the post.
Brown came out with more pressure to start the second half and threatened with several chances, before Cleveland tackled Nico Lozada in the box to set up the penalty kick. Akeel buried the shot in the bottom right corner for his fourth goal of the season to give the Bears a one-goal advantage.
The Brown backline held off the Big Green for the rest of the half, but the visitors made a final attempt with one minute remaining, as Cipicchio denied Eric Jayne with a diving stop to seal the victory. Brown outshot the Big Green in the second half, 10-3.
The two teams ended the night with 12 shots apiece, while Brown held a slight edge in corner kicks, 5-2.
Before the game, seniors Akeel, Jack Gorab, Jameson Lochhead, Tyler Smith and Tim Whalen were honored for their contributions and commitment to the program.
Brown will now wait for the NCAA Tournament selection show on Nov. 16 to see if it will receive an at-large bid.
