PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Quinn English (Milwaukee, Wis.) broke a scoreless tie with the game-winning goal late in double overtime as the Brown men's soccer team downed UMass Lowell, 1-0, in Tuesday night's non-conference contest at Stevenson Field.
Brown improved to 8-5-1 overall to wrap up non-conference play, while UMass Lowell dropped to 7-7-1 on the season.
After nearly 108 minutes of scoreless action, English notched the game winner at 107:55 in double overtime. Brown travelled into River Hawk territory with numbers as Nate Pomeroy (Groton, Mass.) crossed past midfield on the right and hit Tariq Akeel (Rochester Hills, Mich.) in the center, before the senior quickly sent a pass to the left side. Rookie Carl Johan Mix (Stockholm, Sweden) gathered the ball and combined with Will Cross (Nashville, Tenn.) for a one-timer pass to English, who rifled a shot past goalkeeper Austin Kroll for his first tally of the season.
The two teams were even in the opening 45 minutes with five shots apiece, before the Bears outshot the River Hawks in the second half, 4-1, including a final attempt by Louis Zingas (Warren, Mich.) in the finals seconds with a shot that rattled off the post and crossbar.
Brown and UMass Lowell traded a pair of quality shots in the first overtime, before the home side threatened early in the second extra frame, setting up the game-winner with just over two minutes remaining.
Rookie Teo Norhagen (Stockholm, Sweden) made two saves to improve to 3-0-0 overall with three shutouts. Kroll had three saves for the River Hawks. Brown outshot UMass Lowell, 14-8.
