PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Four different Bears recorded double-digit kills with hitting percentages above .300, and Brown University volleyball beat Yale University for the first time since 2005 with a 3-1 (26-24, 19-25, 25-14, 25-16) victory on Friday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
The Bears (10-10, 4-4 Ivy) took the first, third, and fourth sets from the defending Ivy League champion Bulldogs (10-7, 5-3 Ivy) to top Yale for the first time since a 3-2 win on Nov. 16, 2005.
"This is the kind of win where I am just so proud for the team," Brown head coach Diane Short said. "This team has worked so hard, and they have really stuck together all year, just fighting for each other. I'm just so proud of them right now. Hopefully we can continue this – and we will."
Junior Payton Smith (Atherton, Calif.) and freshman Sabrina Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) tied for the match-high with 14 kills apiece, hitting .480 and .323 respectively.
Sophomore Casey Tierney (San Jose, Calif.) posted a season-high 12 kills on .357 hitting to go with a career-best five blocks while senior Shannon Frost (Santa Ana, Calif.) registered her second double-double in the last three matches on 10 kills (.333 hitting) and 18 digs.
Senior Rachele Killian (Laguna Beach, Calif.) tallied her second double-double of the year with 18 assists and 10 digs, junior Sarah Lucenti (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) totaled a team-high 24 assists and nine digs, and freshman Elisa Merten (Woodside, Calif.) chalked up a match and career-high 25 digs.
Sophomore Shirin Tooloee (San Jose, Calif.) added nine kills, and sophomore Melissa Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) contributed 10 digs.
Brown battled Yale – which has claimed at least a share of the last five Ivy titles – in the first set, holding a late 24-23 edge. After Yale knotted the score at 24-24, Smith and Tierney combined on a block and Frost terminated on a kill to give the Bears the 26-24 set win. Stillwell, Smith, and Tooloee each had at least four kills in the frame.
Yale took an early lead in set two and held off a Bear comeback to pull out the 25-19 set win and to level the match at one set apiece. Stillwell, Tooloee, and Smith each had four kills in the stanza.
The Bears responded in set three, jumping out to a 12-4 advantage. Yale pulled within 18-13, but the hosts charted seven of the set's last eight points for the 25-14 win. Tierney paced the Bears with four kills in the period.
Brown grabbed a 14-7 lead in the fourth stanza and maintained an edge at 20-12. Yale trimmed its deficit to 20-15, but the Bears rattled off five of the match's last six points to take a 25-16 set win and a 3-1 match triumph. Frost and Tierney each charted four kills in the set.
Next, Brown continues Ivy play next weekend at Columbia (Friday, Oct. 30, 7 p.m.) and at Cornell (Saturday, Oct. 31, 5 p.m.).
