
Women's Hockey Falls at Maine, 4-0, in Season Opener

AUBURN, Maine – The Brown women's hockey team was defeated by Maine, 4-0, in its first game of the 2015-16 at Norway Savings Bank Arena on Friday night. Freshman Abby Niewchas (Cochrane, Alberta) led the Bears in shots-on-goal with four. Brown's record stands at 0-1-0 on the young season while Maine moves to 3-4-0.
Maine scored late in the first period (15:50) to take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. Cassidy Herman scored while Jillian Langtry and Taylor Landry were credited with the assists. Junior Monica Elvin (Oakland, Calif.) made a total of 12 saves in the stanza.
The Black Bears gained a 2-0 lead over Brown with a power-play goal at 9:19 in the second period by Alyson Matteau.
Maine added an empty net score by Brooke Stacey at 19:32 of the third and then capped off the game with an unassisted goal from Langtry at 19:56.
Elvin made a total of 29 saves in the contest while Meghann Treacy stopped 14 shots for the shutout.
The Bears' defense blocked 14 shots in the game compared to Maine's nine. Maine held the advantage in shots at a 33-14. On the power play, the Black Bears went 1-for-5 while Brown went 0-for-7.
Brown will close out the series with Maine tomorrow (Oct. 24) at the Black Bears' on-campus facility, Alfond Arena, for a 7:00 p.m. game.
