AT A GLANCE
The Bears welcome back 21 letterwinners from last year's squad that went 7-7-3 overall and 3-2-2 in the Ivy League, while seven freshmen join the roster for the 2014 season. Brown has qualified for the NCAA Tournament in seven of the past nine seasons, including a trio of Ivy League titles in 2005, 2007 and 2011. Individually, the Bears return three All-Ivy selections, including junior midfielder Tariq Akeel, who was named to the first team after leading the team with 15 points and six goals. Seniors Daniel Taylor and Alex Markes also earned All-League recognition last season for the first time in their careers.
BROWN IN SEASON OPENERS
The Bears are 47-33-8 all-time in season openers and are 3-1 under the direction of fifth-year head coach Patrick Laughlin. Brown opened the 2013 season with a 1-0 victory over Bryant at home.
SCOUTING THE SAINTS
Siena enters Friday's game at 2-0 on the season after a pair of home shutouts over La Salle and No. 23 Boston University. Junior Tom Allen leads the Saints with three points, including the game-winner in a 1-0 victory against La Salle in the season opener. Alexander Tejera scored the lone tally against BU. Freshman Josh Weiss has started and won both games in goal for the Saints, making three saves. Siena finished the 2013 season at 7-10-1.
MEET THE CAPTAINS
Seniors Daniel Taylor and Ben Maurey will serve as team captains for the 2014 season. Maurey, who appeared in three games last fall before suffering a season-ending injury, will return as team captain for the second straight year. He earned First Team All-Ivy honors as a sophomore in 2012. Taylor will take on a leadership role for the first time in his career after an impressive junior season when paced the team in assists.
MARKES NAMED SENIOR CLASS CANDIDATE
Alex Markes has been named a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award, which is presented each year to the outstanding senior NCAA Division I Student-Athlete of the Year across ten different sports.
