
Volleyball Sweeps Past Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Payton Smith (Atherton, Calif.) paced all players with 12 kills to lead the Brown volleyball team over crosstown rival Providence College, 3-0, in the team's home opener Wednesday evening at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
Brown moves to 1-4 on the season, while the Friars drop to 0-8 overall. Set scores in the match were 25-21, 25-22 and 25-18.
Smith had 12 kills and clocked in with a .647 attack percentage to go along with three service aces. Sophomore Sarah Lucenti (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) paced the Bears with 25 assists and had 10 digs for the double-double effort, while junior Rachele Killian (Laguna Beach, Calif.) also posted double figures with 13 helpers. Senior Kathryn Conner (Newport Beach, Calif.) led all players with 16 digs.
The two teams were all knotted up at 11-11 to open the first set, but the Bears built up a two-point advantage for the lead at 21-19. Senior Maddie Lord (La Jolla, Calif.) and Smith ended the stanza with back-to-back kills to push the Bears in front, 1-0.
Brown raced out to a 7-2 advantage in the second set, but the Friars chipped away and pulled within two points, 10-8. Brown maintained a two-point edge at 15-13 and then used a 6-3 stretch to take the lead at 21-17. Providence made it interesting and climbed back to within one point late in the set, but the Bears ended with consecutive kills to pad the match lead at 2-0.
Once again, Brown had a strong start in the third set, as the Bears jumped out to the early lead at 12-6. Providence pulled within three later on in the stanza, but could not get any closer, as the Bears cruised to the 25-18 victory to seal the win.
Brown returns to action on Friday, Sept. 12 for the opening day of the 2014 Brown Invitational when they host Liberty at 7:30 p.m.
