PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Ben Maurey (Downington, Pa.) scored early in the second half to even the score as the Brown men's soccer team battled Harvard to a tie, 1-1, in Ivy League action Saturday afternoon at Stevenson Field.
Brown moves to 3-4-5 on the season and 1-1-1 in the league, while Harvard halted its eight-game winning streak and now stands at 8-3-1 overall and 2-0-1 in conference play.
Harvard opened up the scoring at 15:21 in the first half, when Kyle Henderson sent a centering pass to Tim Scholl, who rifled a shot from five yards out into the back left corner of the net to push the visitors in front, 1-0. Harvard outshot the Bears by a 4-1 margin in the opening 45 minutes.
Brown raced out the locker rooms and evened up the score at 48:16 when Maurey notched his third tally of the season. Junior Jack Gorab (Newport Beach, Calif.) sent a corner kick into the box, where Maurey was able to gain position and tipped a shot with his heel past the reach of keeper Evan Mendez for the equalizer.
The two teams picked up the pace during the second half with several chances down the stretch on both sides. Harvard rang a shot off the post late in the stanza, while Tim Whalen (Amston, Conn.) was denied on a header in the 85th minute, forcing the game into extra time. Brown had back-to-back corner kicks to end the first overtime, but both backlines kept the ball out of the net during the two OT periods as the game ended in a draw, 1-1.
Senior keeper Mitch Kupstas (Suwanee, Ga.) made five saves for the Bears, while Mendez recorded four stops on the other end. Harvard outshot the Bears, 16-12.
