HAMILTON, N.Y. – Junior Clayton Christus (Bernardsville, N.J.) chipped in the go-ahead goal with less than two minutes to play to complete a three-goal second half rally as the Brown field hockey team overcame a 3-1 deficit to beat Colgate, 4-3, in non-conference action at Tyler's Field on Sunday. The Bears snap a two-game losing streak and improve to 3-3 overall, while the Raiders fall to 1-7 on the season.
"The team really fought hard together and that's been a piece we've focused on even before today," said Head Coach Jill Reeve, who noted the balanced scoring effort that saw four different Brown players contribute goals. "We had great finishing and Colgate did as well, but it was really a tribute to our team to come back from two goals down. It was a really outstanding match overall."
Senior Torie Stearns (Rye, N.Y.), freshman Katarina Angus (West Vancouver, British Columbia) and sophomore Alexis Miller (Caldwell, N.J.) also registered goals for Brown, while senior Avery Burns (Millersville, Md.) assisted on the tying goal and game-winner. Junior goalie Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, Mass.) made nine saves in the win and held strong with six stops in the second half to climb to 3-3 on the season.
Halle Biggar scored twice for Colgate to put the hosts up 2-1 in the first half, and Whitney Jones converted a penalty corner seven minutes into the second half to give the Raiders a 3-1 advantage. Angus then brought Brown within one with her first collegiate goal on a high shot at the 48:59 mark, and Miller blasted in the equalizer from the top of the arc at 53:07.
The Bears maintained an aggressive offensive scheme and plastered the Colgate cage with shots late in the second half, prompting opposing goalie Amanda DiDomizio to make a handful of tough saves and Rebecca LiButti to step up for a defensive stop to preserve the tie. Brown's tenacity finally paid off, however, when Burns whipped a crossing pass to Christus who chopped a shot over DiDomizio's reach to claim a 4-3 lead with 42 seconds left in regulation.
Brown returns to Goldberger Family Field on Saturday, Sep. 28, for the Bears' Ivy League home opener against Dartmouth at 12 p.m.
