Brown and Rhode Island To Light Up The Night

Providence, Rhode Island - The East Side of Providence will be lit up for the second straight season on Saturday, October 1, when Brown squares off against URI in the second ever night game at historic Brown Stadium, which opened 86 years ago in 1925. The game is presented by Dexter Credit Union, and will be televised live on myRITV, with kick-off at 6:00 p.m. Last year's inaugural night game against Harvard drew a near sellout crowd of 17,350, the largest attended sporting event in the State of Rhode Island in 2010. Three banks of Musco lights will illuminate Brown Stadium, with two banks of temporary lights towering above the stadium on the home side, and one on the visitors side.
The Records: Brown (1-1) dropped a 24-7 decision at Harvard last Friday evening, turning the ball over five times to the Crimson. URI (1-2) earned its first victory with a late touchdown to rally for a 21-17 win over Fordham.
myRITV: Saturday's match-up between Brown and URI for the Governor's Cup will be televised live on myRITV. The Governor's Cup History – 96th Meeting: Brown and Rhode Island have met 95 times, dating back to 1909, with the Bears holding a 67-26-2 series advantage over the Rams. Last year, URI came away with a 27-24 win in overtime at Meade Stadium. In 2009, Brown won the Governor's Cup with a 28-20 victory over the Rams at Brown Stadium. Historically, Brown won the first 23 meetings between the two teams, the first 16 by shutout. The Bears and Rams met continuously for 67 years, from 1925 to 1991, but a scheduling snafu temporarily disrupted the series. The series resumed in 1993 and the two teams are scheduled to play at least through the year 2017. Two previous Rhode Island Governors have played in the Governor's Cup game: Phil Noel, Brown Class of 1954, and Donald Carcieri, Brown Class of 1965.
Last Year's Game: In a hard-fought battle for the Governor's Cup, Brown's overtime field goal didn't match a Rhode Island touchdown, as the Bears dropped their first game of the season, 27-24, in overtime before a sellout crowd of 7,622 at Meade Stadium. Senior All-Ivy quarterback Kyle Newhall-Caballero, making his first start of the season, had a big day for the Bears, completing 25 of 40 passes for 325 yards and three touchdowns. He was injured on Brown's last offensive play of regulation and did not play in overtime.
All-Ivy QB Kyle Newhall-Caballero Returns: Senior quarterback Kyle Newhall-Caballero (Gilbert, AZ) passed for 269 yards and a touchdown in last week's game against Harvard. He
was named the Ivy league's Player of the Week and New England Football Writers Gold Helmet Award winner as the outstanding player in New England after throwing for three touchdowns against Stony Brook, including the game-winning 12-yard touchdown pass with 3:06 remaining. He also threw touchdown passes of 38 and 46 yards and completed 22 of 37 passes for 292 yards. The Ivy League's first team All-Ivy quarterback in 2009, Newhall-Caballero's 2010 season was almost over before it started. He broke his hand in the first week of pre-season camp, returned to play half of Brown's win over Harvard, and broke his wrist on the last play of regulation in Brown's third game against Rhode Island, missing the remainder of the season. He passed for 325 yards and three touchdowns against the Rams. In 2009, Newhall-Caballero completed 259 of 413 passes for 2,709 yards and 18 touchdowns. He was second in the nation in completions (25.9 per game), 10th in total offense (281.4 yards per game), and 12th nationally in passing yards (270.9 yards per game). Newhall-Caballero's 259 completions in 2009 were seventh for a single season in the Ivy football history. He also set an Ivy League record with 46 completions against Holy Cross.

Night, Night, Night: Brown opens its season with three straight night games for the first time ever. Saros Catches On: All-Ivy wide receiver Jimmy Saros (Grosse Point Park, MI) had 10 catches for 80 yards, both career highs, against Harvard last week. Last year, Saros caught 42 passes, seventh best in the Ivy League, for 481 yards, with four touchdowns
Quarterbacks In Waiting: Junior Patrick Donnelly (Longmeadow, MA), a passing and running threat, saw valuable action in 2010. Donnelly completed 43 of 81 passes for 411 yards and a touchdown, while running for 114 yards. Also competing for time under center are junior quarterback John Ryan (Exton, PA), who passed for one touchdown and ran for another in the Spring Game, and junior Alexander Phelan (Walpole, MA).

All-Ivy Returnees: The Bears' offensive fortunes could hinge on the successful return of first team All-Ivy quarterback Kyle Newhall-Caballero (Gilbert, AZ), who was able to play in parts of just two games last year before being sidelined due to injury. Brown's offense also returns first team All-Ivy wide receiver Alex Tounkara-Kone (Staten Island, NY) senior honorable mention All-Ivy wide receiver Jimmy Saros (Grosse Pointe Park, MI), senior honorable mention All-Ivy tailback Mark Kachmer (Wheaton, IL), and senior honorable mention All-Ivy center Jack Geiger (Whitefish Bay, WI). Brown's defensive unit returns six starters, including three All-Ivy players, led by first team All-Ivy junior defensive back AJ Cruz (Lake Forest, CA), senior second team All-Ivy safety Steve Peyton (Woodland, CA) and honorable mention All-Ivy defensive end Clay McGrath (Longmeadow, MA).
Tounkara-Kone Picks Up Where He Left Off: Senior wide receiver Alex Tounkara-Kone (Staten Island, NY) turned in another outstanding performance against Stony Brook, making seven receptions for 149 yards, while hauling in touchdown passes of 38 and 46 yards. Tounkara, a first team All-Ivy and All-New England selection for the Bears in 2010, ranked among the nation's top wide receivers with 61 receptions, 18th best in the country and second in the Ivy League. His 84.20 yards per game were also second in the Ivy League and 19th nationally.
Lundevall Makes Game-Winning Catch: Junior wide receiver Tellef Lundevall (Highland Park, IL) made the biggest reception of his career, a 12-yard touchdown catch against Stony Brook that rallied the Bears to a 21-20 victory over the Seawolves. He had four receptions for 67 yards, including a 30-yard TD reception vs. Harvard. In 2010, Lundevall impressed the coaching staff with 32 catches for 370 yards and two touchdowns.
Brown Head Coach Phil Estes: 14th-year head coach Phil Estes, the 19th head coach and second winningest coach in Brown football history (79 career wins), has brought the Brown football program to an unprecedented level of success, winning three Ivy League Championships (1999, 2005 and 2008), including Brown's first ever Ivy outright title in 2005. He helped guide Brown's Class of 2009 to two Ivy League titles, the first class in Brown football history to win two Ivy Championships. Estes' Brown teams have also finished second three times and third four times, while compiling an impressive 78-51 overall mark (.605) in 13 seasons. He has also coached and recruited Brown's only four Ivy Players of the Year: Sean Morey '99, James Perry '00, Nick Hartigan '06 and Buddy Farnham '10. A former offensive coordinator at the University of New Hampshire, Estes was also the Bears' recruiting coordinator for four years (1994-1997) and coached the running backs for three years.
Local Players To Contribute: Brown has two from Rhode Island on its 2011 roster: senior All-Ivy punter Nathan Lovett (East Providence) and sophomore defensive tackle Brett Polacek (Providence). Sophomore defensive end Michael Yules hails from South Dartmouth, MA and played at Moses Brown. All three are listed on Brown's 2-deep this week.
Offensive Front: Senior All-Ivy center Jack Geiger (Whitefish Bay, WI) returns to anchor the offensive line at center. Geiger had a terrific season in helping Brown's passing offense to an Ivy League leading 244.3 yards per game, while allowing just 10 quarterback sacks. Senior Luke Landers (Friendswood, TX) had a solid junior campaign, and will start at right guard for the Bears, while senior Evan Johnson (Kettering, OH) also earned several starts at guard, and is Brown's starting left guard. Juniors Jack Templeton (Ramsey, NJ) and Cole Hooper (Oklahoma City, OK) have earned starts at the tackle positions.
Norocea Gets His Kicks: The Brown kicking game is in the capable hands of sophomore All-Ivy kicker Alex Norocea (Hermosa Beach, CA), the Ivy League's kick-scoring leader with 7.1 points per game, who connected on 15 of 21 field goals and 26 of 27 extra points in his inaugural season with the Bears. He ranked seventh nationally in field goals with 1.50 per game. His 15 field goals rank second best in Brown football history, and seventh in the Ivy League record book, while his 71 kick-scoring points are 15th in Ivy history. Additionally, Norocea's 12 field goals in Ivy games are second best in Ivy history. A two-time Ivy League Rookie and Special Teams Player of the Week, Norocea booted a Brown record five field goals vs. Harvard, and a season long 45-yard field goal against Cornell.
Co-Captains: Providing leadership for this year's team are senior quarterback Kyle Newhall-Caballero (Gilbert, AZ) and senior defensive tackle Kyle Rettig (Clearwater, FL).
Gotta Lovett: Two-time All-Ivy senior punter Nate Lovett (East Providence, RI) ranks second in the Ivy league with 43.7 yards per punt, and leads the league with six punts inside the opponents 20 yard line. He had a big day against Harvard, punting seven times for a 43.7 yards per punt average. He twice pinned Harvard at the Crimson five yard line and one at the seven. He also punted well against Stony Brook with three punts for an average of 43.7 yards per kick, including a long boot of 53 yards. He ranked second in the Ivy League with an average of 42.1 yards per punt in 2010. He had four punts of 50 or more yards, including a season-long 57 yard boot against Harvard and 55-yards against Princeton. Lovett's strongest game came against Dartmouth where he punted for a 45.2 yards per punt average, with a 53-yard boot.
Two-Time All-Ivy AJ Cruz: Brown's defensive secondary ranked number one in the Ivy League in pass efficiency defense a year ago, and was led by junior two-time All-Ivy corner back AJ Cruz (Lake Forest, CA). Cruz made nine tackles against Harvard, returned three punts 26 yards and brought back five kickoffs 92 yards. He stepped in to make seven tackles against Stony Brook and also returned punts for the Bears. A first team All-Ivy selection in 2010 after earning second team All-Ivy honors in 2009, Cruz made 33 tackles, led the Bears with eight pass break-ups, and tied for the team lead with two interceptions. He also returned kickoffs for the Bears, with 13 kickoff returns for 295 yards, including a 45-yard return against Princeton.
O'Donnell and Smithwick Step Up At Linebacker: Brown's senior linebackers Daniel Smithwick (Danville, CA) and Matt O'Donnell (Tipton, IA) turned in strong performances against a strong Stony Brook rushing attack. O'Donnell had 10 tackles against Harvard, and led the Bears against Stony Brook with 12 tackles, including seven solo stops and two tackles for a loss of six yards. Smithwick, who had five tackles vs. Harvard, made nine total tackles vs. Stony Brook, including one for a loss, and recovered a fumble for the Bears.

Top Tackler Peyton Returns: Hard hitting senior All-Ivy safety Steve Peyton (Woodland, CA) registered nine total tackles in Brown's win over Stony Brook, and came back with six tackles vs. Harvard, including five solo stops. He headed the Bears' defense in 2010 with 79 total tackles, 7th best in the Ivy League. He came up big in Ivy games with 10 tackles against Dartmouth, and 12 total hits against Penn. Peyton was named the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week for his dominating play against Rhode Island, where he seemed to be everywhere on the field, leading the Bears with a career high 20 tackles in the battle for the Governor's Cup.
Kachmer Top Tailback: Brown's ground attack is led by junior All-Ivy tailback Mark Kachmer (Wheaton, IL), a versatile tailback, who led the Bears with 557 yards on the ground, sixth best in the Ivy League. Kachmer rushed for a 89 yards in Brown's win over Stony Brook, and came back to rush for a career high 97 yards against Harvard. He also had seven receptions for 60 yards against the Crimson. Look for sophomore speedster John Spooney (Northfield, OH), considered the fastest man in the Ivy League after winning the Ivy Championship in the 100 and 200 meters, to back-up Kachmer.
McGrath and Rettig Excel Up Front: Senior All-Ivy defensive end Clay McGrath (Longmeadow, MA) and senior co-captain Joseph Rettig (Clearwater, FL) have started out the season with solid performances. Rettig had six tackles vs. Harvard, including a quarterback sack for a loss of 12 yards. He made a key tackle for a five-yard loss on Stony Brook's final possession, and finished the game with five total tackles, including two for a loss. McGrath, an honorable mention All-Ivy selection last season, had a big game against Harvard with 13 total tackles and 2.5 tackles for a loss. He had six total tackles and two tackles for a loss against the Seawolves.
Three Rings: Three members of the Brown head coaching staff – head coach Phil Estes, assistant head coach Abbott Burrell and offensive coordinator Frank Sheehan – have earned three Ivy League Championship rings (1999, 2005, 2008) coaching the Bears.
Speaking of Rings: Bears' tight ends coach Joseph Leslie has earned nine Ivy League Championship rings, including two as a coach of the Bears in 2005 and 2008, three as a player at Dartmouth (1969, 1970, 1971), two as an assistant coach at Penn (1983, 1984), and two as an assistant coach at Dartmouth (1972, 1996).

Week #1: Brown vs. Stony Brook 9/17/11 Stony Brook, NY
Senior quarterback Kyle Newhall-Caballero threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Tellef Lundevall with 3:06 remaining to lead the Brown football team to a 21-20 come-from-behind victory over Stony Brook in its season opener. Stony Brook had a last opportunity to win the game at the end, but its 55-yard field goal attempt on fourth down with 56 seconds remaining fell short.
In the previous three games between Brown and Stony Brook, no more than five points separated the two teams, with one game being decided by a single point and another in overtime.
"This was a tremendous win for our team over a very strong Stony Brook squad," said Brown head coach Phil Estes. "Getting the first win on opening day is really big. Kyle Newhall-Caballero hadn't played in a year and did an outstanding job with Stony Brook in his face all day."
Lundevall finished with a game high eight receptions for 68 yards. The pitching and catching duo of Newhall-Caballero and senior wide receiver Alexander Tounkara-Kone had a big day for the Bears. Newhall-Caballero completed 22 of 37 passes for 292 yards and three touchdowns, while Tounkara-Kone hade seven receptions for 149 yards.
Senior linebacker Matt O'Donnell was the defensive standout for the Bears with a team high 12 tackles, including two tackles for a loss. Senior safety Steven Peyton and senior linebacker Dan Smithwick registered nine tackles each.
Stony Brook's running game kicked in on its second possession, leading to the first score of the game, a 38-yard field goal by Wesley Skeffington to give the Seawolves a 3-0 advantage with 4:6 left in the first quarter.
The Bears answered just over a minute later when Newhall-Caballero spotted Tounkara-Kone open on a post pattern to connect on a 38-yard touchdown pass and give the Bears a 7-3 advantage after one quarter.
The Seawolves scored on the first play of the second quarter to pull ahead by a 10-7 margin, and extended their lead to 17-7 on a 26-yard touchdown run by Miguel Maysonet with 6:22 left n the quarter.
The Bears got the break they needed when Senior Daniel Smithwick recovered a fumbled Stony Brook punt at the Seawolves' 46 yard line.
On the first play from scrimmage the Bears struck with a flea-flicker. Newhall-Caballero handed off to junior tailback Mark Kachmer, who pitched the ball back to Brown's senior quarterback, who spotted Tounkara-Kone wide open at the eight yard line and ran the remaining eight yards into the end zone for a 646-yard score to pull the Bears to within 17-14 with 4:02 left in the quarter.
Stony Brook capitalized on a Brown fumble at the Seawolves 47 yard line early in the fourth quarter, booting a 32-yard field goal to pull ahead by a 20-14 margin with 8:58 left in the game.
Week #2: Brown vs. Harvard 9/23/11 Cambridge, MA
With a steady rain pelting Harvard Stadium, Brown turned the ball over five times and fell to the Crimson by a 24-7 margin before a rain-soaked crowd of 18,585. The game was evenly played on the offensive side of the ball with Harvard holding a narrow 366-352 advantage in total yards, and turning the ball over just once.
Two key Brown miscues deep in Harvard territory prevented the Bears from rallying from an 14-0 deficit– a second quarter Harvard interception in its own end zone, and a Brown fourth quarter fumble at the Crimson one yard line with the Bears trailing by a touchdown.
Harvard was without its starting quarterback Collier Winters, who was injured last week against Holy Cross. He was ably replaced in the lineup by junior Colton Chapple, who passed for 207 yards and threw two touchdowns.
Brown quarterback Kyle Newhall-Caballero completed 28 of 52 passes for 269 yards and a touchdown. Bears' junior tailback Mark Kachmer ran for 97 yards on 19 carries.
Harvard got on the scoreboard first following a bit of trickery. The Crimson set up for a 23 yard field goal on fourth and four at the Brown six yard line, but holder Colton Chapel took the snap and ran for a first down to the Bears' one yard line. Junior Trevor Scales ran into the end zone on the next play to give the Crimson a 7-0 advantage with 5:12 left in the first quarter.
The Crimson seemingly took control of the game with an 80-yard yard scoring drive to extend its lead to 14-0 early in the second quarter following a 20-yard touchdown pass from Chappel to Cameron Brate.
Uncharacteristically, the Bears had two personal foul penalties, a fumble, and a dropped pass in the end zone to trail by 14 points at the half.
Brown turned the momentum in its favor early in the second half when sophomore Emory Polley intercepted a pass at the Brown 44-yard line.
Following an exchange of punts, Bears' senior quarterback Kyle Newhall-Caballero found his stride and directed a 57 yard scoring drive for Brown's first score of the game. He threw downfield to junior wide receiver Tellef Lundevall, who grabbed the ball at the five yard line and spun his way into the end zone for a 30-yard pass play to bring the Bears to within 14-7 of the Crimson with 6:29 left in the third quarter.
The Bears were knocking on the Harvard end zone once again, advancing to the Harvard two yard line, but fumbled the ball away to the Crimson with 13:05 left in the fourth quarter.
Harvard put the game out of reach when Chappel connected on a 56-yard scoring strike to Adam Chrissis with 6:39 left in the game, capping off a 95-yard, eight play scoring drive.
Defensively, Brown senior defensive end Clay McGrath came through with a game high 15 tackles, including three tackles for a loss. Senior linebacker Matthew O'Donnell chipped in with 10 tackles. Harvard was led by Joshua Boyd with 11 total tackles.
