PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Yale Bulldogs were firing on all cylinders on Saturday, as they racked up 42 kills and 12 blocks against the Bears in the 3-0 (12-25, 13-25, 20-25) Ivy League-opening win. Sophomore Thea Derrough (La Jolla, Calif.) tallied a career-high 11 digs while chipping in five kills and a block, but Brown could not overcome Yale's .327 team hitting percentage.
The Bears (4-8, 0-1) stayed close with Yale (7-4, 1-0) through the beginning of the first set, playing the Bulldogs to within in a point until the 7-6 mark. The Bulldogs used a 7-2 run to take control of the frame and the closed out the set on an impressive 11-4 sprint to take a 1-0 lead.
Set number two played out much as the first did, with the Bears staying with the Bulldogs until the 5-5 mark, until a 6-0 run put Yale in the driver's seat. Another 8-3 run by the Bulldogs pushed them away from Bruno and on to a 2-0 advantage.
Despite the deficit, Brown refused to quit, playing Yale tight in the third, even making a late run at the 20-14 mark. Bruno was able to spark its offense late, using a 6-1 run keyed by a kill from senior Laurielle Hofer (Laguna Beach, Calif.). The run proved to be not enough as the Bulldogs closed out the match on a kill from Allie Frappier, her seventh of the game.
For Brown, sophomore setter Alexandra Rieckhoff (Laguna Beach, Calif.) had 15 assists and five digs, while senior libero Annika Gliottone (Warwick, R.I.) tied a team-high with 11 digs.
The Bears return to Ivy League action next weekend when they host Columbia on Friday, September 30 at 7 p.m., prior to taking on Cornell on Saturday, October 1 at 4 p.m. at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
