New London, CT- Sophomore Dean Serure (Coral Gables, FL) scored the game-winning goal with just 28 seconds left to lift the Brown men's water polo team to a thrilling 10-9 victory over Queens College this afternoon. Unfortunately the Bears couldn't keep the momentum going, as the squad lost for the second week in a row to St. Francis College, 14-9.
Against Queens, the Bears trailed 5-3 at the half, but went on to outscore Queens 3-0 to take the lead after the third quarter. Bruno then extended its advantage to 8-5, but the Knights went on a 4-1 run to tie the game with 36 seconds remaining. Brown was able to draw an ejection and Serure came up with the game-winner with 28 seconds left and Ryan Gladych (Corona Del Mar, CA) secured a big steal to seal the win.
Brown wasn't as lucky in game two, as the ECAC Champion St. Francis topped Bruno for the second week in a row, 14-9. While it was an extremely tight contest for three quarters, the Terriers held a 9-7 lead with a minute left in the third quarter before extending its advantage to three and never looking back.
The Bears are back in action on Friday, Oct. 1 at MIT for an 8:00 p.m. game, followed by a 3:00 p.m. contest against Iona the following day.
