Baltimore, Md. – In the final game of the Madison Bingaman Memorial Tournament, Brown (3-4) was edged in a highly contested match 3-1 (27-25, 21-25, 22-25, 23-25) by host UMBC (4-4). The Bears were able to take the first set after facing match point for the Retrievers but were topped in the next three, all coming by four points or less.

Sophomore Katrina Post (Pasadena, Calif.) had a team-high 16 kills and Freshman Emma Pastore (Los Angeles, Calif.) also finished in double-digits with 13 kills. Freshman Alexandra Rieckhoff (Laguna Beach, Calif.) chipped in a double-double with 42 assists and 15 digs.

UMBC went up early in the first set, grabbing a 5-1 lead. Brown fought back, however and went ahead at the 11-10 mark. The Retrievers tied the game at 24 and gained match point on a kill from Emily Vandegrift, but Post nailed down a kill on the next play to tie it up again. Senior Brianna Williamson (Cincinnati, Ohio) stepped up with a service ace and Post followed up with a block to take set one for the Bears.

Leads proved not to be safe in set two as well when Brown went up 5-2 and UMBC rallied to go up 8-7. The Terriers did not look back from that point holding the lead from the rest of the game.

Seven lead changes before the 18-all mark highlighted set three. The Retrievers maintained a one point advantage for the rest of the game and closed out the game on a Brown error and a kill from Sabrina Hoeks.

The two teams continued to trade points in the final frame of the match. Brown was able to take a 12-8 advantage on a service ace from junior Annika Gliottone (Warwick, R.I.), but the Retrievers scored seven of the next nine points to take the lead. A kill from Amanda Nickel (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) tied the game at 15 but UMBC scored the next point and held the rest of the set for the win.

Brown returns to action next weekend when the squad returns to Providence to host the Brown Invitational on Sept. 17-18. The Bears will take on URI, Central Connecticut State and Boston College.
