Philadelphia, Penn. – Brown (6-10, 0-4) was tripped up in a defensive battle at Penn (6-9, 2-1) on Saturday night as a season-high 16 team blocks was not enough as the Quakers prevailed 3-1 (20-25, 25-18, 16-25, 22-25). Freshman Emma Pastore (Los Angeles, Calif.) totaled a match-high 15 kills and has posted three-straight contests with at least 15 kills.
In the first set, Penn jumped out to an early 10-4 lead but
the Bears battled back to tie the game at 14 on a kill from senior
Danielle Vaughn (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.). Back-to-back Quaker
kills gave Penn the momentum back however and the team used an 11-6
run to close out the set.
The two teams battled for much of the second set, seeing the
score all square at 15. A kill from freshman Alexandra Rieckhoff
(Pasedena, Calif.) on the next play gave the Bears a lead that they
would not relinquish. Pastore picked up four kills in the next
eight plays to help Brown to a 25-18 win.
The Penn offense began to click in the third set as 16 of
their 25 points came by way of the kill. Brown regrouped at the
beginning of the fourth game, taking the lead 7-6 on a service ace
from freshman Thea Derrough (LaJolla, Calif.), but the Quaker
offense continued to roll as Julia Swanson tallied her
14th kill of the match in the winning effort.
Rieckhoff tallied her seventh double-double of the season
while three players had double-digit digs for the Bears. Junior
Annika Gliottone (Warwick, R.I.) had a team-high 20 digs and joined
Reickhoff (15) and senior Brianna Williamson (Cincinnati, Ohio),
who had 13 of her own, on the strong defensive effort.
The Bears return home to the friendly confines of the
Pizzitola Center on Oct. 15th at 7 p.m. against Columbia
after completed this three-game road trip.
