Cambridge, MA- In the final game of the MIT Invitational, the Brown men's water polo team (2-1) suffered a 14-4 loss to Pacific and was handed its first loss of the 2009 season.
“We were able to break their press and get them to help in other areas,” said Head Coach Felix Mercado. “I think we learned a lot about ourselves at this point in the season and I expect us to learn from these lessons and continue to improve.”
After forcing the Bears into eight turnovers, Pacific cruised to a commanding 8-2 lead at the half. The Tigers continued its scoring spree, lighting up for four more goals in the third to extend the lead to 12-2 heading into the final quarter. The Bears were able to get some shots on goal, but the feisty Tiger defense kept the ball out of the cage.
Brown and Pacific each tallied two goals in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough for the Bears as the Tigers earned the win, 14-4. Brown junior Corey Schwartz (Los Angeles, CA) led the offense with two goals, as junior Gordon Hood (Carlsbad, CA) and freshman Svetozar Stefanovic (Belgrade, Serbia) each added one. Senior captain Kent Holland (Orinda, CA) led the defense with seven saves in the cage.
The Bears will travel to Princeton to take on Iona at 8:40 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11, and then UCLA at 12:15 and Bucknell at 4:00 p.m. the following day. The Bears will end the Princeton Invitational when it takes on the Tigers on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 1:00 p.m.
