Kingston, R.I. – The Brown women's volleyball team
dropped a pair of matches on Saturday at the URI Invitational,
losing 3-1 to New Hampshire in the morning, and following with a
3-0 loss to Rhode Island in the evening. Freshman Christina Berry
(Ladera Ranch, CA) recorded two double-doubles for the Bears,
combining for 23 kills and 26 digs, while adding two assists.
In the morning, the Bears took on the University of New Hampshire.
After New Hampshire took the first two sets by scores of 25-16 and
25-20, the Bears grabbed some momentum back with the insertion of
sophomore Annika Gliottone (Warwick, R.I.), who went on to rack up
17 assists and seven digs. Bruno then came back to win the
third set, 25-19, but New Hampshire pulled away to win the fourth
25-20, taking a 3-1 decision in the match.
In the final match of the tournament, the Bears squared off
against host Rhode Island. Brown hung tough with the Rams
throughout, staying in every set until the end, but was unable to
prevent Rhode Island from pulling out the sweep. The first set saw
solid offensive play from both sides, but the Rams were just a
little bit sharper, coming away with a 25-21 win. Rhode Island then
followed that with another 25-21 win to run out to a 2-0 overall
advantage. The third set was even closer, as the Bears forced Rhode
Island into extra points, but the Rams were ultimately able to
close out Brown and take a 28-26 decision for a 3-0 match win.
Junior Brianna Williamson (Cincinnati, OH) also played a strong
match against Rhode Island, finishing with 11 kills, five assists,
eight digs, and one ace, while rookie Carly Cotton (Newport Beach,
CA) added 31 digs on the defensive end for the day.
The Bears will be back in action on Thursday, September 17, when
they host Wyoming at 5:30 p.m.
