The Bears dropped a hard-fought 4-2 game to the Colgate Raiders
on Friday evening, as junior Jenna Dancewicz's two goals
weren't enough to overcome some hot shooting by the hosts, as
the Raiders built a 3-0 lead in the first period and held on for
the win. With the loss, Brown falls to 1-9-3 on the season, and
0-6-3 in league play, while Colgate improves to 4-11-3 overall, and
2-4-3 against ECAC Hockey foes.
The first period was all Colgate, as the home team outshot the
Bears 14-7, and picked up three goals in the opening 20 minutes.
Rookie goalie Katie Jamieson kept Brown in the game though, making
11 saves, and appearing to make another on Colgate's third
goal before the puck slipped through. Jamieson was particularly
impressive on a Colgate power play midway through the period,
stopping all three extra man shots by the Raiders.
In the second, Bruno began to take the momentum back, scoring one
goal and narrowly missing on several others, as the shots were
nearly even in the frame. Freshman Laurie Jolin had a breakaway
opportunity near the halfway point of the period, but just missed
scoring Brown's first goal as the Colgate keeper made a nice
save. Senior Nicole Brown then had another one-on-one chance just a
minute later, but her shot was just wide of net, preserving the
shutout.
After another Colgate goal made it 4-0 with just under eight
minutes remaining in the period, Brown got on the board with the
first goal by Dancewicz. The Bears worked the puck around the
perimeter looking for a good opportunity, then passed it in to
Dancewicz on the right side, where she fired it into net to make it
a 4-1 game. Jolin and sophomore Paige Pyett were credited with
assists on the play, the team-leading fifth of the season for
Pyett.
Brown continued to hold the momentum in the third, outshooting
Colgate 14-10 in the frame, though the Raiders held them off the
board for the first 18 minutes of the period. With just under two
minutes left in the game, Dancewicz set up at the left post, took a
pass from behind goal, and again found the back of the net to cut
the deficit to 4-2. Jolin picked up her second assist of the game,
while fellow rookie Alena Polenska earned her first. Despite a
solid third period, the Bears found themselves without enough time
to complete a comeback, and the Raiders held on for the 4-2 home
victory.
The Bears will be back in action tomorrow afternoon, when they
travel to Ithaca, New York to take on the Cornell Big Red at 4:00
p.m.
