Ithaca, NY- The Brown men's soccer team (8-1-5, 3-1 Ivy)
defeated Cornell University (5-5-3, 0-2-2-), 1-0, on Saturday
evening on Charles F. Berman Field. Freshman Thomas McNamara (West
Nyack, NJ) scored the golden goal in the 71st minute of play,
earning his third of the season.
The Bears dominated the first half, out shooting the Big Red 8-4,
but goalkeepers Paul Grandstrand (Orono, MN) and Scott Brody
mustered any chances both squads would get. But Brown's
McNamara tallied the game-winner at the 71:20 mark on a cross from
the right side by sophomore Sean Rosa (Montreal, Quebec). McNamara
ran under it and blasted it into the net from right in front of the
goal,
Cornell out-shot Bruno 3-2 in the second period, but Brown earned
a 10-7 overall advantage, and also had seven corner kicks to
Cornell's four. Grandstrand tallied two saves in net to
receive the win, as Brody recorded five in tonight's
match.
McNamara led the team in shots with three, two of which were on
goal, in his 41 minutes of play, as Rosa, Nick Elenz-Martin
(Encinitas, CA) and Mike Manella (Toluca Lake, CA) each tallied
two.
The Bears are back in action at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1,
against the Penn Quakers.
